Local airports closed ahead of Tropical Storm Ernesto

The BVI Airports Authority (BVIAA) has announced the closure of all local airports on Tuesday, August 13, due to the expected impact of Tropical Storm Ernesto.

The weather system is forecast to affect the territory on that date.

The Terrance B Lettsome International Airport will be closed from 11 am, while the Virgin Gorda Airport and Auguste George International Airport on Anegada will close from 10 am.

BVIAA Managing Director Kurt Menal stated in a press release on Monday that all airports will remain closed until the “all clear” is given and a complete assessment of each airport is conducted.

Individuals with confirmed travel plans for August 13 and 14 are advised to contact their respective airlines directly for further details.

Menal added that further information on the reopening of the airports will be provided in due course.

The Department of Disaster Management (DDM) has issued a Tropical Storm Watch for the territory, warning of potential storm conditions within the next 48 hours.

The DDM urged residents to review their hurricane response plans and make necessary preparations, emphasising the importance of stocking up on essentials and securing properties.

Swells from the storm are expected to affect the Leeward Islands starting Monday night, August 12, creating life-threatening surf and rip current conditions.

Residents are advised to follow official weather advisories, comply with guidance from national meteorological services, and stay informed to ensure timely preparations for the storm’s potential impact.

The first valid reason to close the BVI airports in 2024 – Bad weather!!!!

Prior airport closures due to broken down fire trucks, sick outs, no ATC’s in the control tower, administrative problems, terror threats, etc. are man made closures that are completely preventable!

  4. @ THOUGHTFUL SAILOR says:

since we don’t have any international airport / then the article should be ( all airports are closed,
we already know they are local , dUH
