Local arrested for illegal entry as infected police stations reopen

After closing for deep cleaning and sanitisation recently, the Road Town and East End police stations have now reopened.

They had closed after an unspecified number of officers at those locations tested positive for COVID-19, which has been rapidly spreading locally.

The spread is linked to smuggling activities in and out of the territory and police have made at least one arrest in connection with these activities this week.

Fifty-nine-year-old Aubrey Daniel of Duffs Bottom has been charged with illegal entry. Police were alerted to his alleged illegal entry into the territory by “a concerned member of the public on August 31”.

As for the reopening of the stations, the Royal Virgin Islands Police Force (RVIPF) is advising persons to still call in reports and avoid visiting any of the stations unless in situations of emergency.

“In order to protect yourself, loved ones, other members of the public and the officers you may come in contact with, we are asking that you wear your mask at all times and sanitize frequently once outside of your homes,” the RVIPF said in a media release Tuesday night, September 1.

It added: “Please also remember that it is an offence to be out in public without a mask.  Protection starts with everyone taking ownership of their respective safety; and this can only be achieved if you wear a mask out in public, sanitise regularly and practice social distancing.”

People breaking the law for their personal greed brought on the need for this 16 hour curfew. People breaking the law smuggling started this explosion of the Virus infection, not the authorities.
