Lorna Smith on the hunt to transform financial services

Deputy Premier Lorna Smith.

As she continues her mission to improve sectors and industries under her portfolio, Minister for Financial Services, Lorna Smith will be meeting with financial services professionals today at the Financial Services Solutions Forum.

According to a release from BVI Finance, the forum seeks to provide a platform for industry leaders to engage in transformative discussions and collaborative endeavours, with the ultimate goal of shaping the future of the BVI’s financial services industry.

Participants will get the chance to share their expertise, engage in fruitful exchanges of ideas, and contribute to the development of innovative solutions.

Minister Smith is set to share the government’s vision and plans to support the BVI’s International Business and Finance Centre, setting the stage for direct discussions on how best to craft solutions that support the Centre’s success.

Key topics to be addressed include ease of doing business, investment and trade promotion, infrastructure, industry consultation, international regulatory matters, upcoming trade missions, creating a viable business centre, and developing a strategic vision for the industry.

The BVI financial services sector remains strong, despite global developments such as calls for publicly accessible company registers and pressure to tax wealthy individuals who store money in jurisdictions like the BVI.

The sector is one of two major economic pillars for the BVI. The other is tourism.

With one of the biggest financial services industries in the world, a recent report by UK-based research and consultancy firm, Pragmatix Advisory, found that investments mediated by BVI business companies support around 2.3 million jobs globally and generate an extra US$14 billion each year in taxes for governments worldwide.

Lorna – take a tourist taxi round the island – what do they see they come off the cruise ships? – scrap and dumped cars, overturned boats in Shipwreck Bay (formerly Sea Cows Bay), dirty streets, waste bins piled high, beggars by the shops and in town harassing them for money, pot holes in the roads and very expensive. What else is there to see or do for tourists? Most long term tourists go on a boat or go to the other islands like Virgin Gorda or Anegeda. Good hotels are limited and the best one now being at Nanny Cay marina as it been done up.
