Major bush fire scorches Virgin Gorda

Scene from the fire in Virgin Gorda on Wednesday, April 3.

Property and vehicle owners in Handsome Bay on Virgin Gorda were spared from a significant loss after a bush fire threatened to consume everything in its path on Wednesday afternoon.

Chief Fire Officer Zebalon McLean told BVI News that his department received reports of the fire at approximately 1:19 pm. He said the blaze was contained by 4:30 pm with the help of the community.

“[Community members] were on hand with the water truck and the like,” the Fire Chief told BVI News. “They (fire officers) were then able to put it out and stop it from spreading.”

It is still not clear what caused the blaze.
