Major fire at Virgin Gorda dump

A major a fire has broken out at the public dump on the sister island of Virgin Gorda.

Unofficial reports reaching our news centre is that the fire started around 7 pm on Friday, May 29.

According to Territorial At-Large Representative who resides on Virgin Gorda, Shereen Flax-Charles, officers from the Virgin Islands Fire & Rescue Service as well as police and the airport fire unit have responded at the scene to out the blaze.

“It is, from my understanding, under control. Our community members rallied together — all of the companies with the water trucks and so forth. They are there just as a precaution in case it’s needed, ” she told BVI News.

Flax-Charles, however, said she remains concerned because of a dry spell that the sister island has been experiencing.

“A lot of the rain fell on Tortola and Jost Van Dyke yesterday and, unfortunately, we did no get one drop so everybody was worried about what could happen if it jumps the road. But it seems to be very much under control at this time, ” she said.

The cause if the fire is not yet known as efforts to reach Fire Chief Zebalon McLean has been unsuccessful up to publication time.

Who loves that smell of burning fiberglass in the morning? Must be all those boats they crushed up at the Virgin Gorda Yacht Harbor last week. They used to take the time to strip boats and sink them as Fish Attracting Devices before the storm…
