Major Tortola accommodations already nearly full ahead of Buju Banton show

Shereen Flax-Charles

The BVI is already reaping benefits of being a host country for the Buju Banton ‘Long Walk to Freedom’ tour, as accommodations are near full capacity ahead of the historic show slated for next month.

Junior Minister of Tourism Shereen Flax-Charles gave that indication to BVI News on Monday and said measures are being put in place to facilitate the visitor arrivals that are expected ahead of the June 15 event.

“I believe by now, as far as I am aware, all of the major land accommodations on Tortola are filled but we’re encouraging guests to stay on the sister islands especially Virgin Gorda and Jost Van Dyke because there will be boat rides that are able to take persons back and forth to those islands” Flax-Charles said.

She added: “We’ve been calling around the different properties as we do with any major event to ascertain what are availabilities with this event. We do have quite a lot of nice yachts that are available as well so we encourage persons who cannot find land-based accommodations to take up this option.”

Flax-Charles said tourism officials will also be aiming to capitalise on the event by showcasing local products.

“When persons come to the show, they’re going to eat and drink so we want to be able to feature a lot of the cuisine out of the BVI and we have several rums that are made in the BVI as well as BVI Gin,” the junior minister added.

She also said government is pleased the BVI was chosen as one of the destinations for such a historic event.

She said government is looking at the opportunity as what she describes as a “stepping stone and a take-off of major events”.

We’ve been working around the clock to make sure everything is in place and government has been very cooperative because we realize that an event such as this will catapult us into other major events coming to the territory,” Flax-Charles said.

Government, according to the junior minister, is encouraging more private entities and persons to host more events in the territory in the future.

“We can provide marketing support and promotion through the BVI Tourist Board,” she added.

The Tortola leg of the tour will take place inside the festival grounds in Road Town from 5pm.

    • You are an ignorant fool says:

If you were exposed you would know that some people are actually coming to this show (which is also touring to other countries) just to visit the BVI for the first.

Also take a look at how the Tourism leaders in the other countries are seizing this opportunity.

Of course this is a good tourism promotion opportunity as some of those people visiting may just return or encourage others to do the same.

Closed-mindedness will get us nowhere. Seize the opportunity and promote the BVI well. Those of us who have sense have your back and understand the importance!
