Malone hoping for 75% vaccination in BVI by first quarter of 2022

Minister of Health & Social Development Carvin Malone.

The government is hoping to reach the 75 percent COVID-19 vaccination threshold to achieve herd immunity in the territory by the first quarter of 2022.

According to data from Ministry of Health, 16,417 people have been fully vaccinated which represents roughly 55 percent of the population while 1,666 people have received one dose of a two-dose vaccine which is roughly 6.6 percent of people in the territory.

The Ministry is hoping that at least 22,500 people get vaccinated against the coronavirus which represents 75 percent of the population.

The territory currently has 21 active COVID-19 cases with 38 recorded deaths. The last person who died from the coronavirus was an elderly man. He died late last month and was said to have underlying issues.

In an interview with BVI News regarding the vaccination rate in the territory, Minister of Health and Social Development Carvin Malone said he is quite pleased with the uptake of the vaccine despite vaccine hesitancy amongst some people in the territory and globally.

He said some persons might be more accepting of the Pfizer vaccine which is the only COVID-19 vaccine approved by the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

“We are currently accommodating people who want the Pfizer vaccine by allowing them to go to St John’s to be vaccinated. We are also getting our own fridge to store the Pfizer vaccines which the UK [United Kingdom] has promised to provide enough Pfizer doses to vaccinate the population,” Malone stated.

Large increase in local vaccinations expected

Malone also said that when children between the ages of 12 and 17 start getting the Pfizer vaccine, there will be a large increase in the vaccination rate in the territory.

The Pfizer vaccine has been deemed by health organisations across the world as the safest for children. He noted the territory needs approximately 4,000 more persons to reach the touted 75 percent for herd immunity and based on the response from citizens, it is achievable by early next year.

He also mentioned the various vaccine mandates implemented by countries such as the United States might play a key role in the territory’s efforts.

“We have to give our hats off and congratulate the persons who have taken the vaccine. We know it is an issue throughout the Caribbean and the world and we will always give credit where credit is due … For those who have not taken the vaccine, we will continue to encourage them,” the Health Minister said.

Since the start of the pandemic in March of last year, 2,765 COVID cases have been recorded in the territory while 2,706 people have recovered from the virus. There are no current cases of hospitalisation. More than 85,941 samples have been collected and 81,024 have been tested.

Keep your dirty hands off our children – nobody knows what the potential long-term effects of the vaccines are. I’m an adult, made my own choice and got vaxxed – I will not make that decision for my child until we really understand the ramifications of all this – lets say another 10-15 years.

Do you keep the fried chicken and fake juices from your kids as well? Do you know or care about the long term impacts of those habits? Majority of kids sit on their ‘smart’ devices while inhaling processed poison on a daily basis but vaccines are your only concern. Nice.

Do you listen to yourself? We are grown people. We lived our life already. Keep your hands off our kids you wicked self. It appears jabbing people is more important to you than understanding the long-term damages to our children’s. Next time take the 3rd or 4th jabb in your @ss and see where it gets you.

  5. Just my 2 cents says:

Based on the statistics above, there is a 97.87% recovery rate. Can any one explain to me why Covid-19 vaccination should be mandated? Why is it that naturally boosting our immune system is not highly encouraged?

How gullible can anyone be to suggest or believe that if 75% of the populace is vaccinated, herd immunity will be achieved?

Yep, recovery rate not too bad. But that recovery rate means (if no one were vaccinated) 665 BVI people would die from first infection – everyone will get it eventually. You may think that a price worth paying.

Also, the recovery rate assumes hospitals not overrun so that people who could be saved are, and that people don’t die of other causes which could have been helped if COVID had not taken up all resources.

Please make sure the elderly and immunocompromised get their booster shots.
If you look at what is happening in Europe now they are having a fourth surge. Hospitals in Germany can’t cope & are sending patients to Italy!
We have been very lucky here recently in the BVI and everyone is getting too lax.

We aint at 75% as yet.? Wonder why. I thought we already acheived that.

    • Why says:

We have too many weird, self absorbed and badly educated people here to take this seriously. That’s why. Too many see this as a zero sum game. There’s nothing to stop you eating healthily and being whatever religion you want and still getting vaccinated to help you and your community.

  12. Look a sell out minister says:

Anyone with a brain has stopped watching mainstream news and is doing their own research. To see the health minister of a country still pushing this poison after I know the facts (peer reviewed studies, government documents) he is definitely selling his people out!..countries with the highest vaccination rates have the highest civid cases….Gibraltar and isreal are just two. Isreal’s icu is full of only vaccinated!!

And people so stupid…the double vaxced in these countries are now considered unvaccinated without the booster…don’t be a puppet for the devil!

You can still catch and spread the virus with shot 1 and 2, and people still willing to take a 3rd! You’ve been played!!!!

And the adverse reactions…OMG…these devils will suffer. Google ‘althete sudden death or ‘teen sudden death’ for a shock.

What is taking so long with the freezer and supply of Pfizer? Little Anguilla way ahead of us now. Vulnerable Seniors need their booster-shots and young people their initial shots. Next surge in cases happening right now.
