Man allegedly hits neighbour unconscious with rock to head

A Fat Hogs Bay man accused of clobbering a man in the head with a rock has been brought before the court for assault occasioning actual bodily harm.

Neville Alphonso, a middle-aged construction worker was not required to plea to the charge when he appeared before Magistrate Shawn Innocent on Thursday.

The court heard that he and the alleged victim (the complainant) resides in the same apartment complex on the eastern part of Tortola.

On March 6, this year, the virtual complainant was reportedly sitting on the roadside socializing with a female friend.

During that time, the accused reportedly exited the apartment and saw the two interacting.

He allegedly armed himself with what the court heard was a sizable rock and began hitting the complainant on the head.

The court further heard that despite the virtual complainant’s pleas for Alphonso to stop, the accused man did not and allegedly proceeded to deliver blows to other parts of the man’s body.

The complainant reportedly lost consciousness and his female friend sought help.

He was later transported to the hospital for medical attention.

The matter was subsequently reported to the police and the accused man was arrested and charged.

Bail

Alphonso was granted bail in the sum of $5,000 on his own recognizance, which the Crown did not object to. As part of his bail conditions, he is to report to the East End Police Station between 6 am and 6 pm.

In addition, he was ordered to surrender all his travel documents to the police, and he is not to apply for any new travel documents or travel out of the territory without the court’s permission.

Notably, the complainant in the matter is said to be abroad and will be away for a period of six months so the matter was adjourned to May 1, 2019.
