Man charged in fatal heist has till mid-February to find attorney

One of the men held in connection to the robbery that resulted in the death of Catherine Pickering back in April was given until February 16 of next year to obtain legal counsel when he appeared before Magistrate Khadeen Palmer today.

The Virgin Gorda resident, K’Shoy Alexander, is specifically charged with possession of a prohibited weapon in relation to the fatal incident.

His case has now been adjourned for April 6 when the Magistrate hopes Alexander will answer to the charge.

Alexander was jointly charged for possession of the AK-47 assault rifle — which police believed to be the murder weapon — with Purcell Estate resident Richard Haripersad. Haripersad was represented by attorney Valerie Stephens-Gordon.

Two sisters, Teffiny and Tyann Smith are both charged with the offence of ‘aiding offenders’ in the incident. They are represented by Stacy Abel.

Meanwhile, Shemar Richardson, an employee of Maricel Pickering, is accused of supplying information which resulted in the robbery of Maricel and the murder of her mother Catherine. His attorney is Stephen Daniels.

Zion Hill residents Akeem Hopkinson and Shameek Grant round off the list of accused persons. They are charged with murder, robbery and possession of a firearm with intent to endanger life. They also already have legal representation.

On April 18 of this year, Maricel, the owner of Big Brother’s Gas Station in Baughers Bay was attacked while exiting her vehicle to enter her residence, which she shared with her mother in Paraquita Bay.

It is alleged she heard a voice saying ‘give me the money’ and she became frightened and drop the bag holding $2,950 on the pavement and ran in the direction of her house. While running away, it was said she heard several explosions. Her mother, Catherine, who was home at the time heard the commotion and exited the house to assess what was happening.

She was subsequently shot in her head and chest by the perpetrators.

Catherine was taken to the Dr. Orlando Smith Hospital where she died the following day.

By law everyone is entitled to have an attorney to represent them in court. But this crime is so heinous I am scratching my head wondering what kind of defense these murderous perpetrators attorneys can come up with in their defense. The usual bs defense:
    1. He/She is from a good family
    2. He/She has children
    3. He/She have to take care of elderly parents
    4. He/She born here
    5. He/She never been in trouble before
    6. He/She is the sole provider for the family.

And I can go on. Catherine Pickering was from a good family.
She had children. She was not a trouble maker. She deserved to live her life peaceful and quiet as she was doing. She was home. These criminals must be brought to justice, inspite of what defense their attorneys present. I know it’s a defense attorney job to muddy the water and plant doubt in the minds of the jurors. But Justice must work for the victims also. Justice for Catherine Pickering.

A life sentence is not much different from a 30 year sentence, so dubious that it will prompt anyone to talk.

These trigger happy careless irresponsible boys and girls need to feel the full blunt of the law.
Look at the type of weapon these little boys walking around with?
These are not weapons to play with!
Just for possession of this type of weapon should result in at least 20 years in prison.
