Man remanded for harbouring fugitive brother Khori Prince, bawls in court

Dajshon Benjamin

A Greenland man who was allegedly caught harbouring his fugitive kin has been brought before the court and charged with harbouring a prisoner.

The 23-year-old, Dajshon Benjamin, was also charged with handling stolen goods and possession of 13.2 grams of cannabis.

He was not required to answer to the charges when he appeared before Magistrate Jack Husbands this week.

Allegations

The court heard that on January 30, the accused was arrested along with his brother Khori Prince who escaped lawful custody on January 18.

Police, acting on intelligence, searched Benjamin’s apartment and allegedly uncovered several pieces of jewellery suspected to be from the Mi Amor jewellery heist last December. Roughly $800,000 worth of jewellery was stolen during that incident.

The brothers were subsequently taken into custody and charged.

Benjamin bawls at prospect of remand

When prosecutors informed the court that they were objecting to bail, Benjamin openly wept at the prospect of spending time on remand at Her Majesty’s Prison.

Prosecutors argued that there is a high chance that Benjamin would tamper with evidence if granted bail. They said if he is made to potentially tamper with evidence, the outcome of the ongoing police investigation into the burglary could be compromised.

“He is a high risk,” prosecutors said.

The court subsequently denied bail.

“Why am I being remanded? What did I do? I didn’t do any burglary … I don’t feel I should be remanded to prison,” Benjamin said in loud sobs to the court.

“I got a life. I am doing good,” he added, claiming that this was his first run-in with the law.

The Crown, however, pointed out that his brother’s escape from lawful custody was broadcast throughout local media outlets and he (Benjamin) would have known that his brother was a wanted man.

Benjamin is scheduled to return to court on February 18.

Attorney-at-law Reynella Rawlins represents the accused.

It takes a village to raise a child. Sankofa-go back and fetch it. We all need each other, we are all interconnected. When we begin to realize this then we begin to live. When one down, ALL down! Unity is strength, division is detrimental and taking us out one by one! Real recognize real. I pray for strength for all affected.

If you’re part of the village raising and enabling Mr Prince’s behavior and crimes then shame on you. We all know right from wrong. Those that choose wrong shouldn’t be protected they should be forced to take responsibility for their actions and face the consequences of them. If someone had done this for him over the last 10yrs of his wanna be thug life maybe he would be where he is now, and he wouldn’t be taking his family down with him.
You can’t pick your family but you can decide whether you allow someone else’s toxicity into your life…blood or not. Surround yourself with honest, positive, hardworking people….that’s unity and they will give you strength to not fall into being an accessory to your bloods criminal ways.

Enough Talk let parents, friends, neighbors, churches do more. Let us organize a town’s meeting put together a committee and form our own outreach programs. I will help to donate what time I have to help our sisters and brothers. Our future is at stake our youths are all going astray. We have an epidemic called addiction, our young children are too exposed to things they shouldn’t be exposed to at such a young age and now they’re out of control. Society should not try to pretend this is not happening because it might not be a family member of theirs. The problem will only get worse as time goes by, drug pushers continue to get richer and spread more territory until they end right at your doorstep. The crime rate will only grow if we ignore the signs of trouble, be proactive, not reactive after something happens. Having Great power comes with responsibility, to the next government I challenge you to put these things into place, mental health facilities, rehab centres, upgrade sandy lane, tackle the overgrown drug problem plaguing our society. Make BVI Great I won’t say again since everything in history was built on lies to begin with no exceptions…..i.p 204.176.378.219

People seriously hurting out there and they look “normal” and when they act out in different ways then outsiders looking in begin to point fingers, laugh, mock, judge and forget the old saying, “today for me, tomorrow for you.” We must work as one, pull up when someone falls, shed light when we see darkness, listen more, be understanding, judge less. But ya know something, they put Christ on the cross so what you think they’ll do to me or you. That’s man-mean (mankind) for ya now.

That this young man didn’t see the brevity of his actions in harbouring a fugitive is the reaon WHY the prosecution is right in having him remanded.

Mi Amor jewelers will never be the same as a company, regardless of insurance policies!

Let this be a lesson to the rest of you who harbor fugitives. An accomplice to the criminal, no matter how innocent, is just as guilty as the criminal!
