Local athletic sensation Kyron McMaster has ended his 2019 World Championship campaign by just missing out on a podium finish in the final of the men’s 400-metre hurdles on Monday, September 30.

Running out of lane two, McMaster looked likely to finish third but was edged out at the finishing line by Qatar’s Abderrahman Samba.

McMaster finished fourth in a season’s best time of 48.10 seconds while Samba finished in a time of 48.03 seconds.

Defending champion Karsten Warholm from Norway won the race in 47.42 seconds ahead of the second-place finisher, Rai Benjamin of the United States. Both Warholm and Benjamin were ranked first and second in the world going into the race.

McMaster’s finishing time makes him the fourth fastest 400-metre hurdler in the world for 2019.

McMaster had a controversial semi-final race on Saturday, September 28, which saw him being disqualified after finishing third due to a hurdle violation. The decision was later overturned following a successful appeal which saw McMaster advancing to the final.

All focus will now be placed on the two remaining British Virgin Islands athletes at the games — Eldred Henry (Shot Put) and Chantel Malone (Long Jump) who will compete on October 3 and 5, respectively.

If the race was 399m Kyron would have bronze – maybe the last metre was a warm up for the entire nation as my heart may have stopped completely!! So very very proud. Congratulations on your world leading run.
