Local athletic sensation Kyron McMaster has had a season decorated with victories and his latest run has landed him the International Association of Athletics Federation’s (IAAF) trophy for the Men’s 400-metre Hurdles event.

McMaster won the IAAF trophy for the second consecutive year by defeating the 2017 World Champion in the event, Karsten Warholm from Norway.

During Thursday’s Diamond League showdown in Zurich, Switzerland, the Norweigan was in the lead for more than three-quarters race. But, in an impressive run, McMaster clipped the European right at the finish line to win in a time of 48.08 seconds.

Warholm finished dangerously close in a time of 48.10 to claim second place.

“I have been growing a lot. I really enjoyed every experience I have been through. I feel good about today’s race. But I am very tired of course. It went exactly how I wanted. I got a good rhythm,” McMaster said after the nail-biting race.

Only winner from Caribbean

McMaster is said to be the only athlete from the Caribbean to win a trophy at the Zurich leg of the 2018 Diamond League championship.

Arguably, one of the local star-athlete’s most historic races happened back in April when he won the territory’s first ever gold medal at the Commonwealth Games in Goldcoast Australia.

McMaster is currently ranked the third fastest 400-metre runner in the world this year.
