Meetings with UK’s OT Minister were productive, promising

Wheatley

Immigration & Labour Minister Vincent Wheatley has indicated that talks between local officials and UK Overseas Territories Minister Amanda Milling have been fruitful.

The purpose of Milling’s three-day visit to the territory was to meet with Governor John Rankin, Acting Premier Dr Natalio Wheatley, leaders of the political parties represented in the House of Assembly, and other local stakeholders to discuss the range of recommendations contained in the Commission of Inquiry (COI) report.

“We have been in meeting[s] around the clock for the past days as we try to figure out the way forward. Meetings with Minister Milling have been productive and promising,” Minister Wheatley said in Facebook post last evening.

Wheatley’s statement has been the clearest indication so far from any public official about progress being made within those meetings which started on Monday.

At the time of his post, the legislator had said, “we are finishing our last meeting now with the intention of the Acting Premier announcing the way forward” today, Wednesday May 4.

The Labour Minister noted in his Facebook post that ever since Premier Andrew Fahie’s arrest and the subsequent release of the COI report, the territory has been thrown into a state of anxiety, confusion and anger.

“It is important that during such times, words and actions should be measured and well thought out,” Wheatley stated.

He then asked that the territory continue to keep legislators in prayers as they chart the way forward.

Upon her arrival in the territory, Minister Milling had said: “I recognise that these are difficult times for the people of BVI. I am here to listen, and to understand. It is important that we are honest and open with each other when discussing the COI report and the issues it has identified.”

Yesterday, the Acting Premier described a proposed takeover by the United Kingdom as recommended in the COI report as a threat to the BVI’s fledgling democracy.

“I will be making a statement later and we have discussed … the Leader of the Opposition and myself and members of the Opposition and members of our government having a united front in the face of the threats of a takeover,” Dr Wheatley said.

Don’t let up UK; don’t be fooled. The most radical steps are needed or we will be back to square 1 in 5 years, with a 1 way ticket to the new Haiti.

Be careful what is wished for. You too could be invaded, displced and more.

To be encouraging a UK invasion against an entire people is appaling, horrifying and ghastly hideous.

Your implicit bias against an entire people is evident.

So remember, though, evil begets evil.

The suggestion that the UK will treat the VI badly is just silly. The UK is a liberal, multicultural,multi-religious democratic country. They recently had referendums on Scotland leaving the union and Brexit. Their prime minister is being asked to resign for having a birthday cake. An mp has just resigned for watching porn. Their standards of governance are not perfect but are certainly better than the graft, cronyism, corruption and nepotism that exists in the government and civil service of the VI.

Sorry, that dislike was s mistake. I agree with you 100%. The UK should not be fooled by these set of crooks. They just want to continue their corrupt business pracyices. Please deliver us from these crooks.

We need to take a good hard look how we got to where we are and stop blaming alone and do something.

These so called “leaders” are more like pimps selling out the country in the short term to protect themselves and their assets.

This also isn’t the first time and place in history or geography this has happened.

Corrput leaders who care about their comfort while we end up with all the issues and a future of discomfort.

If all ayo want to cosey up to whoever is well connected and has money and think you’re getting some while the country burns, then I assume you have somewhere better to go when everything is gone.

People need to start caring about one another and realise that the few who are vocal out there only pretend to care about us. They especially only care as long as we get behind them.

Understand this politicians : the majority of the BVI want you out of power and away from the cookie jar. We want a temporary UK takeover that will put right some of the constitutional problems that have led to the current situation and some strong checks and balances to make sure we don’t get another dictator and a crew of thieves.

Then we want elections. And we seriously doubt that any of you will ever be elected to power again.

“He then asked that the territory continue to keep legislators in prayers as they chart the way forward.”

Really? Same old group are looking for prayers from us peasants so that they can be given time find new and more creative ways to milk the public purse?

If the UK leaves this same group in charge to fix the problems they and so many more of their predecessors created then why would they bother coming here at all?

Just because they all change positions, and denounce and distance from our former dictator does nothing.

Further more, how many of these current elected officials will be, or currently are, under investigation?

I am supporting Dr. Natalio Sowande Wheatley, ALL THE WAY!

What we need, is a level and calm head going forward, and right now, he is in possession of all those necessary tools!

We must allow the process to go through and with subsequent elections, the people will eventually decide the way forward!

Should we have the Kingdom take over?

I am not for these things, however, the allegations in the COI Reports MUST BE dealt with.

And whatever methods are necessary to CORRECT the allegations, that is what I will support, up to, and including, closer scrutiny of the country’s finances!

Really?!? The UK taking over the government’s reins is “a threat to the BVI’s fledgling democracy”?
So far our “fledgling democracy” has been a threat to good governance!
A fledgling is a baby bird – a chick or a nestling. What we desperately need is some adulthood in our government.

How does the demotion to district rep feel? Well deserved. You are by for the worst labour minister we’ve ever had. Good riddance. Your alleged corruption will be made public soon. Sit back and wait.
