Mitsy Ellis-Simpson seeks At-Large candidacy with VIP

Mitsy Ellis-Simpson

Author and businesswoman Mitsy Ellis-Simpson is campaigning to become one of four Territorial At-Large candidates for the Virgin Islands Party (VIP) in the upcoming general election.

Simpson, who is seeking approval from the party’s Congress, made her political intentions public in a six-minute-long campaign video on social media.

Simpson said she is confident she possesses the skills to run At-Large for the party.

“It is important to have a Territorial At-Large candidate who is competent, productive, [and] result-driven … You want a candidate who has our people’s best interest at heart. I Mitsy Ellis-Simpson, I’m that candidate,” she said.

In an address to party Congress members, she added: “I ask for your nomination so together we can move our country forward, move our people forward for a better future unified as one BVI.”

According to Simpson, going into politics was never part of her initial plan. She said as she grew professionally and through her service to others, she was inspired to step into the local political arena to make a difference in the BVI.

Simpson said, if elected, she would seek new ways to increase revenue and lower the territory’s debt burden.

She proposed revenue-generating initiatives such as implementing what she described as an ‘authentic brand programme’ for the tourism industry.

“An economy that is vulnerable, needs good governance. The next general election is about the future of our people versus poor leadership. It is about competence versus popularity, it is about our courage to take that step to create change that is necessary for the prosperity for our country,” she said.

15 vying for VIP Territorial At-Large candidacy

Chairman of the Opposition Virgin Islands Party (VIP) Andrew Fahie said Simpson is one of 15 persons vying to be among the four Territorial At-Large candidates under the VIP banner.

He commended those who are willing to throw their hats in the proverbial political ring to serve their country.

Fahie said the party’s full list of prospective candidates will be in the public’s domain ‘long before the time for the election.’

There is an unprecedented surge of candidates running for office this election, one can only hope that the reasoning behind it is an altruistic one and everyone is legitimately wanting to see a change in policy and make a difference in the lives of each and every constituent residing in the BVI (even if these candidates are few and far between normally).

All the best to Misty and I hope she is successful(she can bring alot to the discussion table)

Wow. This election might be one of the most exciting and spectacular race ever. Seems to draw interest from all corners of the country.

This election represents a changing of the guard as the old goes and the new is installed. Many candidates are popping up for at large, some who have never been or held office.

Some come with baggage of their own, some have not done enough community service.

Advice to the chairman, get the best people without turning off voters.

There is zero consensus for a popular vote in this direction! Writing a book is not enough to claim a mandate from the people!

Is this candidate with VIP? Simply trying to get on the bio team? If the constitution allows her to run, no point arguing whether she borne JA. Obviously she got naturalized!

But here we go, like Lord Ahmad said, we can’t turn off the voters.

Did she stay in the country for Irma or went away and come back many months after, when most of the clean up was done.?

Business woman? Okay what happen to her businesses? Did they hit the tank?

Her back ground is Finance, I think she studied in China at one point. Still we better as VIP team choose carefully. Last thing you want to do is give a way any competitive edge we might have over NDP.

You ain’t seen nothing yet! Think politics is like sitting in a saloon all day? Am now and have always been VIP!

If your potential candidate got what it takes she must prove it, and she must take hard vigorous criticism from all directions and have the answers. Am not convinced, am I bashing her unduly….:??No!
Politics is a tuff sport, if you think our concerns are too much tell her to go sit down in another saloon!

Fact is this ain’t no charity, this is big stakes for the future direction of or beloved country. The book writing stuff is ok, but she has not really been leading any public office or organization. She a new commer. I wish her the best, but she cannot get my vote just on those grounds!!

I don’t care to vote for friends or faces! Show me the real, past present and future, then we can start.

In other words it’s going take more than fancy business to get my support.

          • Constitution Notes says:

An amendment was passed in 1997 which I would summarize in this way. It states anyone born in the BVI to at least one BVI parent, or have been naturalized before 1997 with the status of a BVI Islander can infact run for public office.

This same amendment also states that person born after this date is subject to a more stringent process, where the individual must actually only be born in BVI to at least one BVI parent which would make them a belonger or a BVI Islander or citizen.

This means she gets to run. Whether VIP recruits her is another matter. She is not a VIP candidate as of today. She is only lobbying to become a VIP candidate.

She can form another political party if she is not acceptable.

Once you are born in Jamaica you are a Jamaican citizen regardless of parentage and is entitled to a Jamaican passport from birth.

Once you are a naturalized Jamaican and have a Jamaican passport you can run even if you were born somewhere else. You however cannot run if you are naturalized in another country and have not renounced that citizenship.

I agree that one should check out people in all circles (even on Google), before considering their worthiness to be voted into a country’s leadership. Similarly the BVI needs to properly screen persons coming here to visit. Just imagine that a US Virgin Islander was recently charged with smuggling some Dominican Republic men from Tortola into St. Thomas and that two of them were already deported from the US. The question is “how did they get to Tortola?” Possibly not via the correct means.

From the first day I met Mitsy under a tamarind tree, we clicked right away. She was waiting on her mother and we all walked up the hill together. She was fun, bright eyed and a joy to hang with. From that day we became good buddies. We were about 12 or 13 years old. I expect nothing less than big things from her. She was always so petite and sharp. I respect her opinions even when they were different from mine. We use to talk on the phone all night go to the bathroom to the kitchen with the phone talking sometime saying nothing. If she was Jamaican I wouldn’t know because she spoke proper English and so did I hehehe. I admired you then and now. Keep doing you. You have a big heart.
