Multiplying fast! BVI’s active COVID cases rocket to 91!

The number of active COVID-19 cases in the BVI has nearly doubled within the last 24 hours.

Just yesterday, June 30, the Ministry of Health reported that the territory had 49 active cases — up from the 13 recorded days earlier. Today, that number surged to 91.

Eighty-two of those cases are located on Tortola while the remaining nine are on Virgin Gorda.

“The Chief Medical Officer has been directed to issue a comprehensive statement outlining the measures taken by government, statutory bodies, public and private institutions, private companies, and public and private individuals to lessen the negative effect of the virus,” Health Minister Carvin Malone said in a public statement Thursday evening, July 1.

And while renewing calls for persons to get vaccinated, Malone reminded residents that the territory’s current batch of vaccines will expire on July 31.

This gives unvaccinated persons until July 3 to get their first dose; setting the framework to get their second dose before the expiration date.

“If you are not going to do it for you, do it for your parents, your grandparents, your great-aunts and uncles. They are our most vulnerable who are impacted by this disease,” the minister urged.

“If you are not going to do it for you then do it for your children. At the end of the day, we are hoping that the protection of the adult population will, in turn, protect each child under the age of 17 in this territory,” Malone added.

He continued: If you’re not going to do it for you, then do it for your employers. Every person vaccinated in a workplace continues to protect other employees to ensure that work continues, services continue to be rendered and you can get paid.”

The minister reiterated that new, more aggressive COVID variants continue to emerge as the virus mutates and spreads from one region to another.

As we are seeing, lockdowns just kick the can down the road. Getting everyone vaccinated then letting it spread is the long term answer.

It will get worse. Too many people have not taken the vaccine to protect themselves and others as well as the community at large inclusive og the economy.

They have bought into conspiracy theories hook, line, and sinker, and will pay the price if they don’t protect themselves soon.

When people start showing up @ the hospital gasping for air and realize the hospital is overwhelmed, and they are facing death in the eye, they will come to their senses if its not too late.

Im done trying to convince people to save themselves and stop listening to conspiracies. To each his own.

The vaccine doesn’t prevent one from contracting the virus. However, the vaccine lessen the side effects, lower the death rate and decrease transmission as most persons will be asymptotic thus decreasing the spread. The vaccine is working in first world countries with a high vaccine rate per capita. Praying for the BVI

Your statement is completely false! The vaccine lessens the impact of the virus on the vaccinated but it absolutely does NOT lessen the spread.

Being asymptomatic because of the vaccine does not change the rate of the viral spread. We could still have 100 active cases even if 35000 people in the BVI are fully vaccinated.

Total ignorant crap. The vaccine prevents the disease occurring in 92-98% of those vaccinated. They never have it.

In your comment, there appears seems to be one of desperation? Perhaps doubting your own wisdom vaccinations or not mask up and fill the cupboard with staples. Another lockdown is the only way to stop this cycle. Look like you got a variant. Everyone else does, BVI is special, but not that special. Now in 4 months we can maybe take the masks off. Maybe.

    • Tongue Fu says:

About two weeks ago the Government made a decision to allow for vaccinated travelers to enter without quarantine and entry test. This was done to appease the cruise ship companies and then the locals who would have made noise for their exclusion. Now we are seeing this surge so this is no coincidence. It is also no coincidence that the Government is refusing to release complete figures of who is vaccinated or unvaccinated out of those testing positive and in addition who has mild symptoms and who are asymptomatic. This would help people to get a true picture of what is happening so we do not have to rely on rumor and innuendo. This may well help their vaccination campaign so why not release the data? Then again that is not part of their agenda. This is why there is so much distrust.

Israel is one of the most inoculated countries in the world and they are experiencing major spikes where 50% of the persons are fully vaccinated:

      https://www.businessinsider.com/israel-50-of-delta-variant-cases-vaccinated-severe-2021-6

Even though people can be hospitalized and can die despite being fully vaccinated:
      https://www.cnbc.com/2021/06/25/covid-breakthrough-cases-cdc-says-more-than-4100-people-have-been-hospitalized-or-died-after-vaccination.html

Well to clarify, the AstraZeneca vaccine was used in the UK for begging of the year, moderna was not even available to them yet. If you are to call and ask anyone now they will say that they are indeed now using the moderna. Reason being was the Uk changed the guidelines for the vaccine and said only those above the age of I think it was 50 will be getting the AstraZeneca shot. Due to the number of cases of blood clots. However everyone that went for the vaccine before April all got the same vaccine that we got here. The moderna is not with out it’s one side effects, last article I read they had a few hundred cases of the mussle around the heart inflaming or swelling.

There are two reasons why not everyone in the UK is taking the AZ vaccine:- (\
      1) it is not always available as it’s production cannot keep up with demand, and
      2) the EU is upset with the UK for hogging the AZ vaccine several months ago, so now a few of the EU countries are not recognizing it for allowing entrance into the EU.

    • @bvi says:

I live in the UK. Most people I know have had the Pfizer or AstraZeneca vaccine. Moderna is being used but launched later than the others (so I know less people who have been given this one).

If we use the 2019 number of 30,000 people living here……. that paints a pretty dark picture. I believe the Minister of Health has done his best to either get the word out to encourage people to get vaccinated or keep the number of cases down. What the hell more do you guys expect this man to do when many of you are turning a deaf ear to his pleadings?

Some of your thinking is political given the COI, but some people need to stop thinking politics on this complex medical issue, use their common sense, and protect themselves.

Who knows the data may help some in their decision to vaccinate. I noticed that the majority of these cases usually recover but that data never tries to highlight the triumphs..Let us get an accurate look at the data.. This is a chance for the BVI to study the symptoms of both the vaccinated and unvaccinated closely.. Yes we rely on the data studied by others but this is your chance to actually say you have proven this or that. Just my opinion.

  23. RC Conn says:

I am a US citizen and I can tell you that you are all being unwise as it relates to Covid. You are destroying your country’s tourism from a virus with an already low 99.8% rate of recovery if you get Covid. STOP thinking Covid is a death sentence because it is not. COVID rates will NEVER go to ZERO! Ever! It is a virus and it is here to stay. Vaccines do not guarantee that you will not get Covid nor will they guarantee that you will not die from Covid. We cancelled our trip to the BVI due to the stupid quarantine rules and just spent almost $20,000 US dollars on a 10-day vacation in Turks & Caicos (another British territory) and there was none of this fear over Covid and no lockdowns. STOP listening to all the baseless fear and propaganda and tell Mr. Malone and others on your beautiful islands that if you destroy your tourism industry over a 0.02% chance of mortality from Covid, you will have lost your ability to provide for your families!!!! If you think I’m just one person, go look at the posts on FaceBook for The Soggy Dollar Bar on JVD and see what all the Americans are saying about coming to the BVI – everyone is cancelling.
