My claim of a 2nd COVID death may have been premature — Malone

Minister of Health Carvin Malone

Health Minister Carvin Malone revealed that his recent announcement about the BVI’s second death from COVID-19 may have been made prematurely.

Malone announced last Friday while giving an emergency update on the territory’s COVID-19 status that one of the BVI’s elderly residents passed away as a result of the virus.

However, speaking on the VIP Let’s Talk radio show last evening, Malone said while the elderly person may have died after being diagnosed with the virus, an autopsy had not yet been done to determine the official cause of death.

A COVID-19 update the minister delivered last evening, as well as the most recent bulletin issued by health officials, both cite the total number of COVID-related deaths in the BVI as one.

“I made sure that we had been transparent … when I announced that here we have the second person who died positive with COVID-19. But as to whether or not the second person died from COVID-19 would have to be determined by the autopsy that will be taken,” the minister said.

At the time, Malone made that potentially false announcement on July 2, only one day remained for unvaccinated residents to get a viable jab from the territory’s stock of soon-to-expire AstraZeneca vaccines. The UK has since pledged to supply the territory with more.

Active cases surpass 500 mark

Meanwhile, Malone disclosed that there were an additional 80 COVID-19 positive cases added overnight. This brings the total number of active cases to 558.

It was also revealed that two persons who contracted the virus were being treated in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of the Dr D Orlando Smith Hospital.

A new community testing schedule was also announced for persons who may have been exposed to the virus at various institutions and gatherings over the last few weeks.

Deputy Premier Dr Natalio Wheatley suggested that the recent upsurge and rapid spread of the virus were perhaps due to what he suspected was the delta variant of the virus. But this has not yet been confirmed by health officials.

He also said a general lack of awareness and concern for the territory’s situation has also been a significant contributing factor.

“The reason why we have spread is because lots of persons who most likely do not know that they’re positive – they don’t know that they’ve been exposed – they continue to move around and make contact with other persons, and those persons become infected,” Dr Wheatley said.

Both Dr Wheatley and Malone applauded businesses that chose to voluntarily cease operations temporarily to help stem the outbreak.

Chief Medical Officer (CMO), Dr Ronald Georges in a statement released yesterday, said the unprecedented rise in infections was uncharacteristic of previous outbreaks in the territory.

According to the CMO, concern needs to be given to identifying the variants of COVID-19 circulating in the territory as a result of this.

  7. WHO says:

The section of the WHO guidelines relating to the classification of deaths states that “a death due to COVID-19 is defined for surveillance purposes as a death resulting from a clinically compatible illness, in a probable or confirmed COVID-19 case, unless there is a clear alternative cause of death that cannot be related to COVID disease (e.g. trauma).

  8. Get the facts says:

the question here is one of semantics. and can lead to complacency over the dangers of COVID19.

If I have a pre existing condition and I get Covid and then die because of my pre existing condition that I otherwise would have lived with and managed then the result is the same , Covid killed me.

A lot of the covid deaths in the states were also misleading, the CDC said that 95 percent of people that died with covid had a serious underlying illness before they got covid, they didn’t die from covid they were already sick when they caught it and happened to die

    • Ivermectin says:

No, it has NOT been proven effective. Trials are still taking place to ascertain whether its use can be recommended for covid-19 treatment. It is an anti-parasitic. Maybe if you have worms and catch covid, it can help you!

  11. No says:

It was NOT premature, it happened because that’s how you all have been programmed. Everything is COVID COVID and fearmongering. There are people here suffering with hypertension, kidney failure, cancer, diabetes etc. and nobody gives a f**k about that. The fact is with COVID or life on a whole, these people are most at risk but we have free vaccines but nothing free with respect to stopping or treating chronic diseases. All of this happening infront of our eyes and we are supposed to believe that government really cares about health? COVID is mainly an issue with persons that have pre-existing conditions, it’s not all about vaccination alone. A sensible approach alongside vaccination is support for persons with existing health issues the same that’s being done with vaccinations.

I’m with you on this. The minister did this intentionally. The main goal is to instill fear in people and cause panic and confusion. By doing this, person would be out in full force the next day for the vaccine. I’m sure some may have come in contact with carriers of the virus in those same lines. Once fear takes hold, people start to panic they become confuse, do things they may no do this creating confusion and run amock of things. By now we all know common sense have left along time ago only to be replace by deviseness, confusion, ignorance, division and down right evil to others. It very mind boggling to me.

      @ NO.

      Well said.

They have sold this as the magic potion that can make covid disappear.

He has done this before. When Maria contracted the virus he went to the HOA and said that she never reported to the authorities without getting the facts first.

      Carvin is Minister of FEAR.

  14. Autopsy!? says:

What fool is going to do an autopsy on a person that has covid!?
Great way to get a few more cases and risk lives needlessly. Malone should work on keeping his lips from flapping all the time. It makes the whole country look bad.
