My godson K’Moi was a promising young man

Businessman and former legislator Mark Vanterpool has paid an emotional tribute to 26-year-old K’Moi Walters, describing him as a “promising young man” whose life was cut tragically short.

In a Facebook post following Walters’ fatal shooting, Vanterpool said Walters was his godson, adding that he was respectful, ambitious and full of potential.

“I watched him grow from a respectful young man with big dreams into a remarkable young professional,” Vanterpool wrote. “When he was given the opportunity to pursue his college education, it brought me great joy to support him on that journey. One of his messages that I will treasure forever simply said: ‘Words can’t explain my gratitude. Love you forever, Uncle Mark’.”

To illustrate their relationship, Vanterpool also posted screenshots of encouraging exchanges between himself and Walters. The messages showed the legislator motivating the young man to stay focused, continue working hard and pursue his goals, underscoring what he described as Walters’ desire to improve himself and provide for his family.

Vanterpool said the loss had deeply affected him and extended condolences to Walters’ child, other relatives and friends.

Reports are that Walters was fatally shot in Huntums Ghut during the early hours of July 6, after he allegedly refused to hand over his personal belongings to thieves. Police said he sustained gunshot injuries and later died at the Dr. D. Orlando Smith Hospital. His death marked the British Virgin Islands’ first recorded homicide of 2026. Detectives have since said they are pursuing multiple leads and are urging anyone with information to come forward.

The killing has prompted an outpouring of grief across the territory, with political leaders, community members and residents describing Walters as a respectful and hardworking young man. Several have also renewed calls for stronger action to address gun violence and improve public safety in the Virgin Islands.
