My goverment inherited bad roads — Premier

File photo

As residents continue to press for improved road conditions, Premier Dr Natalio Wheatley has posited that the poor road conditions are a result of actions and inactions from previous administrations.

The Premier said the 2017 hurricanes did do some damage but stressed that the current state of the roads is a result of poor drainage infrastructure that should have been addressed years ago.

“The truth is, the poor state of the roads is because, for decades, we have built roads with no drainage and have not put the time and attention into properly engineering the roads. If it was done before, the roads would not be in the state they are in now,” the Premier told elected leaders in the House of Assembly on July 13.

He was responding to elected members who called for increased funds to be allocated to the roadways across the territory. The Premier said though his government has been left to fix the roads, his administration will address the problem with the support of all elected members

“It is left to us to fix the problem which we inherited from previous administrations but I’m glad I have the support of all members of the House in doing what should have been done before,” Premier Wheatley said.

The government has vowed to upgrade a number of roads across the territory as frustration grows among several sections of the community.

The Public Works Department is in the process of commissioning an asphalt plant which the government recently purchased. It is being touted as the equipment that will transform the roadways that badly need upgrading.

  8. Smh says:

The VIP inherited bad roads from 2019 after the hurricanes. They also inherited the 65M loan from the CDB and over 170M that was saved by the NDP. We all know what happened to that money. This man is the continuation of Andrew Fahie.

I don’t care about no explanation for why the roads bad still after all this time i want to see people out there working on it. If drainage is the problem then it should have people already out there working on drainage so that the road can get fix properly. The next excuse is that COI recommendations was the focus when he just get in we behind on that too. So what it is actually getting work on?

  23. Hey stop it says:

Your government has been in for two term now and in your first term you did nothing to address the road situation. Stop find excuses and get the roads fix.

  24. What? says:

All governments inherit from a previous governments. the first thing your government did in 2019 was give contracts to people who showed little to no results. then you took our social security funds and covid funds to finance family, friends and senior public officials. You good in your head? them people in district 7 really stupid because no other district would have put you back in there no matter what premier you are. Give Lorna Chief and Kye back his Deputy. Do it quick.

  25. White Elephant says:

Having purchased an asphalt plant , when is it going to be in operation do you have material supply contracts a depot the supporting equipment to haul and lay, have you enough experienced skilled engineers and technicians to do the job?

  26. What? says:

All governments inherit from previous governments but note that you inheritted this time from yourself so things should be easy to fix. However, the first thing your government did in 2019 was give contracts to people who showed little to no results. then you took our social security funds and covid funds to finance family, friends and senior public officials. You good in your head? them people in district 7 really stupid, drugged or were sleeping because no other district would have put you back in there no matter what premier you are. Give Lorna Chief and Kye back his Deputy. Step down.

  27. Shut the hell up says:

Always making excuses, whether you inherit the bad roads or HORRIBLE water situation, are you going to just complain about it or make a damn difference and fix the s**t!!! we voted you all in to work for the people of this country and for the betterment of this country and after 4 years we are still here dealing with the same s**t you and your government promised to fix and our DUMB a** still vote you all useless self in.

  28. Busy Bee says:

Sorry, Hon Premier, but between you and the Hon Mr. Rymer, a government of which you have both been willing participants has had 5+ long (and bumpy!) years to deal with our failing infrastructure.

Seems like we’ve now seen three general elections pass without the roads getting paved. When the electioneering started, we used to be able to count on the roads getting attention.

While the inaction of your predecessors is equally inexcusable, you’ve had ample time to figure out the programme.

    Grade: FAIL

  31. hmm says:

You inherited, fine. Fix it , that is why you are there.

  32. @lol says:

Nope! Actually only 400 people from East end voted for him. He is not the BVI’s premier. He is the leader of the VIP party, whixh was decided by a handful of VIP members, that’s all. He is not my premier, especially with this bs he always spitting. It must be a real embarrassment to watch them work amongst professionals.

  33. informed says:

Are you aware of the term corporate man slaughter.

“Corporate manslaughter is a criminal offence where a business or organisation is found to have caused a person’s death. Your business can be prosecuted for the offence of corporate manslaughter if the way you manage activities causes a death through a gross breach of duty of care to the deceased.”

These roads are killing people. The pot holes people are swerving to avoid. Scooters have no hope if they hit one.

The constant ignoring of dangerous roads is a clear case of this. There have been deaths on the roads due to poor maintenance and poor design.

Its not acceptable to keep passing the buck. Your in office FIX IT.

  34. Takes no Responsibility says:

This guy just goes around and whine and take no responsibility for his inaction. Remember you run for office with the mandate to improve things in the country. Show us the improvement. Employ people who are capable and competent to repair the roads. Regardless of how much money and asphalt you throw on the roads now they will still remain in a state of disrepair until you get people with the skill set to build and repair the roads properly. Show me one of the many contractors being used to build and repair the roads and bridges who is a qualified civil engineer of have a civil engineer on staff.

  35. 2man job says:

Give Skelly a pickup truck with ashfault everyday and you will see action on the roads, simple.

  36. A Capitalist Who Loves the BVI says:

Lame beyond words. The real problem here is that 1/3 of the population works for the government (more a, accurate to say “is employed by the government”), and there’s always another ministry to be created, or a sub-cabinet agency, etc. Add to that the excuse for travel, such as those who went to the last conference on climate change, as if the BVI has anything it can to about it (assuming one thinks that it’s not just a huge hoax), or a conference to discuss banking or [fill in the blank]. Too few of the elected officials here want to get down to doing the difficult and analytically rigorous work that will be required to fix the hideous infrastructure, boost tourism by using the existing ports (air and sea) instead of trying to undertake some huge white elephant project to expand Beef Island Airport (completely unnecessary). Slash the government payroll by at least 15% and then re-allocate 15 to 20% of the remaing staff to working outside on roads, sewers, and the power grid, instead of sitting inside of a cushy air conditioned office where they can spend a good part of their day playing on their phones.

  37. hmmm says:

the person you need to lead the country is the same person most trying to destroy, look at what he is doing for the 6th district. Hon. Myron Walwyn is most suitable to lead this country and bring it to where it should be, we are way behind in everything.

  40. Rubber Duck says:

The roads are surely the fault of the UK.

    Or the Spanish

    Or aliens

Never the fault of the goevernment

  41. No nonsense says:

Somebody, take the Primer out of pre k and put him in Primary in order for him to obtain his Doctorate degree!

  42. Island Man says:

This is your second term and you still fix your mouth talking about inheriting bad roads? So tell me how many years do you need to be in elected office before you stop blaming everybody else but yourself? Didn’t you campaign to fix these very problems?

  43. LOL says:

Hr inherited the bad roads from the VIP because they were the previous government…LOL

  44. Manjack says:

Dr. Hon Premier Natalio Wheatley, (R-7, MoF), the roads are bad needs redesigning, repairing, constructing and maintaining, so it does matter who cause the bad conditions. You are in power now and is your responsibility to fix them. Geh ur dun. That is all.
