Nanny Cay expansion reaches major milestone

Nanny Cay Resort & Marina has reached a significant milestone in its 30-million-dollar expansion project, with construction of the new South Marina breakwater now halfway complete.

The marina announced that more than 34,000 tonnes of rock have been used to build the first 715 feet of the 1,430-foot breakwater, which will protect a new 112-slip marina designed to accommodate the latest generation of catamarans and megayachts.

Construction began earlier this year and forms part of a major redevelopment aimed at strengthening Nanny Cay’s position as one of the Caribbean’s leading marine destinations. The expansion includes a new South Marina featuring 112 slips, including eight berths for vessels up to 125 feet and two berths capable of accommodating 180-foot megayachts.

The project also includes an expanded boatyard, a new 150-tonne haul-out facility, and increased capacity to service larger vessels. Officials say the development is designed to meet growing demand from larger catamarans entering the Caribbean market. Recent industry reports indicate that more 60-, 70-, and 80-foot catamarans are now operating in the region, creating a need for wider berths and larger lifting equipment.

The expansion comes at a pivotal time for the BVI’s marine industry. Recent changes to charter vessel regulations between the BVI and US Virgin Islands have resulted in significantly higher fees for foreign-based charter operators, prompting several companies to relocate vessels and operations to the BVI.

Industry officials have projected that the shift could generate millions of dollars in additional economic activity through yacht registrations, marina fees, maintenance services, provisioning, accommodation and visitor spending. Against that backdrop, Nanny Cay’s expanded marina, larger boatyard and enhanced facilities are expected to strengthen the territory’s ability to accommodate the growing fleet of large catamarans and luxury yachts now choosing the BVI as their base of operations, helping to secure the territory’s position as the Caribbean’s premier sailing destination. Construction continues.

Destroying more seabed for nonsense. Then them want to talk about the blue economy and coastline resilience. The B.V.I is still very beautiful but the overall energy of the place is very negative. You can literally feel it. If you’re from the B.V.I and went to live abroad for some years then returned the the B.V.I you notice the energy isn’t the same. The demographics have changed, the infrastructure has changed (can’t blame hurricanes, it’s been 9 years). The attitude of the people has changed, values have changed. There’s a dark energy hanging over this place. I have to come home often but after a day or two I’m ready to go back to the States. I rather live in the snow then in what should be paradise.

What a fine Belonger you are – NOT. The owners of the marina are injecting $30M to the country, creating jobs and future income, yet all you can do is bitch. It’s your Government that has run the country, allowed bad developments, not invested in infrastructure and failed to apply laws already in place to protect the environment. You’re lucky that you can make another country your own home and as you haven’t stayed in your country to work to maintain the paradise you want, it’s clear that you don’t really care about the BVI at all.

It’s the BVIslanders who make this place what it is. You enjoy the States because it is not the BVI. That dark energy is the local energy: greed, selfishness, corruption, wickedness.
