Nanny Cay eyes more land-based tourism with 13 additional rooms

Thirteen new hotel rooms are currently being constructed at Nanny Cay Resort and Marina.

Resort Manager Jane Tyrrell told BVI News on Thursday that the rooms are being built in the form of two three-storey concrete blocks and is projected to cost the resort and marina ‘a few millions’.

She further said works started on March 3 and is expected to last for 14 months.

“We will be expecting to be open on May 1 next year,” Tyrell stated. “We had five, single-storey rooms there but they were pretty beat up. They either needed to be rebuilt in the original style or knocked down or start again. The work that would have been needed to get done to get it up to standard would have outweighed the cost of knocking it down and rebuilding it and, because of the real estate space, it made more sense to put multi-levels there.”

Upon completion, the rooms will have a “fresh beach chic” look and will be similar in size to the current deluxe rooms which are about 400 square feet of interior space with two queen beds, a sofa, table and the other usual furnishings.

“I think they (customers) can expect four-star hotel rooms, spacious, airy, energy-efficient with nice views. We are trying to make them relatively green, and just a really comfortable place to spend more than just a night,” the resort manager said.

She further noted that operators of the facility is hoping to “bring more land-based tourism to Tortola” with the expansion.

Other sections

Meanwhile, Tyrrell said other sections of the resort are also undergoing a facelift interiorly and exteriorly.

“All of the rooms downstairs have had a light renovation, some paint throughout, some restructuring of bathrooms, ceilings, lighting but not a complete rebuild. The entire second floor was pretty much destroyed [during the 2017 weather events], and so that is a work in progress, and it is three-quarters of the way finished.”

Upon completion, the resort will move from a 40 room accommodation to 55 rooms.

Newton Construction is undertaking the construction phase.
