New tax system expected to go live in 3rd quarter

The government has announced plans to introduce a new tax system during the third quarter of this year.

Premier Dr Natalio Wheatley said efforts are ongoing to launch the Standard Integrated Government Tax Administration System (SIGTAS) upgrade — an initiative he described as a major milestone for the territory’s tax administrative system.

He thanked the project team, comprised of officers from the Inland Revenue Department and the Department of Information Technology, for their unwavering support for the project.

The Premier said SIGTAS is a software solution that helps governments manage their tax revenue and compliance and is currently utilised by over 30 countries around the world.

The latest edition of the software, version 3.0, offers several new features and enhancements that will benefit both the tax authorities and the taxpayers, the Premier said.

Key benefits include an improved user-friendly interface and navigation, integrated online services, enhanced security and data protection, increased automation and integration in addition to expanded functionality and flexibility. Premier Wheatley said the software also has additional customisation and configuration options to suit the specific needs and preferences of the BVI tax system.

Premier Wheatley also explained that the system is web based, which means persons can access it from any device with an internet connection, such as a laptop, tablet, or smartphone. It also has improved reporting and analytics, which allows the government to generate more accurate and timely reports and statistics on tax performance and compliance.

The project’s final phase will encompass several key aspects, the Premier said. These include the training and support of end users, the launch and operation of the new system, the evaluation and feedback gathering, and the resolution of any potential technical issues that may arise.

Premier Wheatley made a public appeal to taxpayers, individuals and businesses to register since new unique tax identifier numbers are now being assigned, and he said these are necessary for the full launch of the system.

Central Government has a dedicated team of experts who are ready to assist taxpayers with registration and help to prepare for this transition, the Premier shared.

The government has also established kiosks at the Inland Revenue Department for taxpayers to register with assistance from officers. Taxpayers are expected to provide a valid passport or driver’s licence, along with a social security card and an email address to register.

The Premier noted that online registration is also available at www.eregisterfortax.gov.vg

Translation = add another step to the complicated paper filing for taxes every month (and another one at year end). There is no other place on earth that has such a complicated system that requires so many people to collect money.
And then the money gets spent on foolish parties and nonsense like the greenhouse.
    MORE NONSENSE!

What do they need to collect taxes for anyhow. Alone with the Environmental tax collected entering the country and departure taxes we should be a First World Country now with perfect roads, schools, electric and water-supply and sewerage disposal. Anyone heard where that money is now???
