Nine inmates earn high school certificates through rehab programme

Nine inmates at His Majesty’s Prison are now high school graduates, having completed the Alternative Secondary Education Programme (ASEP) as part of the Class of 2025.

The programme, aimed at providing second chances through education, is part of ongoing rehabilitation efforts within the territory’s prison system.

Minister for Health and Social Development, Honourable Vincent O. Wheatley, praised the inmates’ determination.

“These young men chose to believe in their futures and committed to a path of transformation,” he said. “Their success represents the very heart of what rehabilitation should be.”

Wheatley also offered words of encouragement to the graduates: “You completed this stage of your journey, not because it was easy, but because you believed your future was worth fighting for. That kind of determination, believing better days are ahead, is what makes today so extraordinary.”

ASEP Coordinator, Ms. Careen Cuffy, recognised the inmates’ achievement and reiterated the programme’s broader purpose.

“Under the leadership of our current Minister of Education, Honourable Sharie de Castro, the programme continues to expand. One of the most exciting developments is our partnership with His Majesty’s Prison,” she said. “Starting September 2025, young men in custody will not only have the opportunity to earn a High School Certificate but also gain vocational certification in Woodwork through ASEP.”

The nine graduates were among 32 students who completed either ASEP or the Virgin Islands High School Certificate Programme this year.

  1. Thank you Hon. Myron Walwyn says:

Thank you Hon. Myron Walwyn. It was Hon. Walwyn who was the education minister and minster for the prison that started the Virgin Islands High School Certificate Program and had it implemented in Her Majesty’s Prison. Give Jack his jacket Hon. Wheatley. Don’t stand there and act like you did something. We must be gracious enough to give credit where it is due.

It is quite refreshing when I open BVI News and there is good news for me to partake of. So tired of bad news in this country and the world.

Congratulations to the Nine inmates who persevered and worked hard to achieve this milestone. Quite impressive that is.

As you continue to aspire to higher heights, please visualise yourselves working an honest job and taking care of yourselves, your children and family upon your release. God is love and believes in second chances. Congratulations is indeed due to you all.

  4. Hmmm says:

Why do we have to politicize everything? Why do we have to mention that Hon. Walwyn started this programme rather than just saying congratulations to these inmates who took the time out while in prison to achieve a new milestone? It truly takes away from the joy of reading this article to see the self aggrandizement upfront rather than the accomplishments of those who worked.

Our older politicians who started Financial Services, started the Social Security Board, and HLSCC to name a few, so you call their names whenever those things are mentioned? Please, focus on the inmates and stop letting these politicians take the spotlight onto themselves when the inmates arre the ones that did the work. Hon. Walwyn started the program. Great. I am sure that he started many things. He was paid to do a job and we didn’t expect him to twiddle his thumbs while there. H.L. Stoutt’s name would be ringing in our earls if we did that me, me, me. I did this and that. The Bible speaks about humility, for if we have to point out every door we opened, we must not have opened many at all.
