No ‘$80K contract’ but Digicel hired in GIS TV venture

Premier Dr Natalio Wheatley has expressed that a contract exists in relation to a Government Information Services (GIS) television programme that was planned under the now-dismantled Andrew Fahie-led administration.

But Dr Wheatley said this contract was issued to Digicel and not to a former media worker, as previously claimed by a radio personality.

“No contracts have been issued except for one contract that may have been issued, I believe, to Digicel, OK. But besides that, no other contracts have been issued and I certainly have not given an $80,000 contract to anyone,” the Premier stated at a press briefing last Friday.

The Premier did not disclose any details about the terms and value of that Digicel contract. However but confirmed that he was in support of the GIS TV initiative which he said should move forward.

Contract claim undermined confidence

Meanwhile, the Premier argued that the claim about him awarding a contract to a former media worker undermined confidence in his authority as leader of the territory.

“I think it’s quite damaging in my view to disseminate inaccurate information because, of course, the public has a certain level of trust that this information is accurate and that information was completely erroneous and seeks to undermine confidence in my leadership and also in the leadership of this new National Unity Government,” the Premier said.

He said having confidence in governance as the territory seeks to stave off a partial suspension of its constitution was of “paramount importance“ right now.

is something that the Unity Party will need to deal with as long as it allowed to exist in the BVI. Get used to it or go home.

It was late February this year when someone came to my office and I was given more information than the media now sharing about this.

Suffice it to say, you are partly to blame. And, more importantly, if “she” didn’t put the information or misinformation out there in the first place, the media will have nothing to pounce upon.

If I take this one face value, I have a few questions

Why would the Government enter this agreement with Digicel? We already have news outlets.

Why not use GIS on its own; who have their own equipment. That would not require a payment to Digicel, a digital telecom provider.

Was this business opportunity tendered? On the face this makes no sense.

If Slow Wande wants to lie, I would have thought that he could do better than this. If he is, this one has more holes than Swiss Cheese.
