No power, water at VG shelter; gov’t workers without internet

Government Complex on Virgin Gorda.

While the rest of the territory complains about poor internet service locally, government workers on Virgin Gorda would be happy to get any internet at all.

But, according to Education and Culture Minister Myron Walwyn, other residents on the island are without much more necessary commodities.

“The shelter over Virgin Gorda has no electricity, no water. The Administration Complex has no internet connection over there and, of course, [there are] all the [other] issues with telecommunication and so forth,” said Walwyn who held office hours on the island last week.

He told members of the House of Assembly on Friday that residents on the sister island ‘are feeling left out quite a bit in the whole development of the country’.

‘We can’t just focus on Tortola’

He then urged legislators to ensure the sister islands are adequately included in the territory’s recovery and development.

“As we develop the country, we can’t just focus alone on Tortola. We’re not going to achieve that vision that we want because the vision should be a vision where nobody is left behind, no community is left behind, no island should be left behind,” Walwyn said.

He added that Virgin Gorda representative Hubert O’Neal has been privately championing the cause.

Virgin Gorda is one of the sister islands that has been struggling with post-hurricane issues such as a run-down government administration complex, as well as damaged police and fire stations.

Back in February, Sister Islands Programme Coordinator, Vincent Wheatley said repair works at the administration complex would have begun ‘soon’.

  1. Gumption. Official says:

I pray for my community of Virgin Gorda especially my hometown of North Sound. It’s really sad the way we’ve been treated. I wish I could have done more for our community. I’m just one person with the heart but lacking support to get things done.

  2. Keen Observant says:

Not surprised at all. Politics had never had an inclusive component since politics began in the BVI. Further, the political machinery operates in similar modes world wide.

The interest, economics and distribution thereof always flow from the central location of government out.

St. Thomas, for example, always get funded before St. Croix or St. John.

What is troubling here, given the facts of that article, is there appear to be supreme neglect on going there, and human beings are suffering because of.Then, such is not new either.

    • Charnele says:

It took the Minister this long to realize that Virgin Gorda is part of the BVI. We have been treated like second class citizens for years.

      Our R————- is a joke.

  3. Katniss says:

The bvi like the hunger games because just like that movie our government only cares about the capital.

  4. Tarpons says:

The government building is severely moldy; and the employees are still forced to report to work daily. This is the exact reason why most depts offer services from the lobby area. THE BUILDING NEEDS TO BE CLEANED IMMEDIATELY! Why should the employees have to work in such horrid conditions? So sad, just so sad.
