Officials waiting to see if ‘leaked’ Advance Poll results true

Permanent Secretary in the Deputy Governor’s Office, Carolyn Stoutt-Igwe

The Office of the Deputy Governor said it cannot confirm whether some reported leaked results from Advance Polling Day last Thursday are actually rea/accurate.

The so-called leaked results — which have been circulating on social media and which could bring the entire integrity of the 2019 elections into question if found to be true — can only be confirmed after the conclusion today’s general election.

“If the results are confirmed on Monday night, then we’ll have to deal with that. But I know everything that was done (the Advance Poll results) is under seal so I’m not sure where these are coming from,” Permanent Secretary in the Deputy Governor’s Office, Carolyn Stoutt-Igwe, told BVI News.

While not ruling out the possibility that the leak is real, Stoutt-Igwe expressed doubts.

She said her doubts are primarily from the timing of the so-called leak.

“I am at a point where I’m concluding that some of it is just bare speculation based on the number of the ballots that were cast in each district,” she said.

“I am just finding it strange. If they really had the results, why weren’t they out before the [ballot] numbers were released? We will just have to wait and see whether on Monday night if there is any truth and then we can take it from there because, at this stage, I don’t know.”

The Office of the Supervisor of Elections said 1,120 persons voted on Advance Polling Day last Thursday, February 21.

Advance polling was held for police and election officers who are assigned to work on Election Day (February 25), persons on remand, those travelling on Election Day, the elderly, as well as persons who are illiterate or those who require assistance to cast their votes.

I’m waiting to see too. Questions I have are why is 7th and 8th District? Why was the name of the son of the supervisor of elections used for the demonstration? Why wasn’t the supervisor changed before this election?

We shall see and it will all be revealed in time

If true, this cast an ominous start to this critical election (any election) process. If true, it seems as if we borrow hook line and sinker from the alleged occurrences from other locales. This allegation should give the Governor/Premier cause for reinforcing the conduct of the election.

They must protect and secure the advanced votes cast. There must be a strict and controlled chain of custody of the ballot boxes and voting equipment. There are already rumors flying about who received what in the advancing polling. True, this might be just idle and malicious chatter. Nonetheless, they must make it a mission and priority to protect the integrity of the vote and the voting process. They must increase the monitoring and the vigilance. And I thought the Commonwealth Association observing was just a formality. This allegation must be vigorously investigated and the guilty faced severe punishment.

At the end of the day, the worst that should have been said is that the election and process was fair and not tainted. Currently, there is a dark cloud hovering and hanging over the integrity of the whole process. Now doubt may hang over the process. Let’s get through the rest of the election without incident. In any event, clearly, changes are needed.

On the one hand, the Gov office is waiting to see if the leaks are true. And on the other hand, the Gov office is jumping to conclusion. The professional thing to have done is based any comment on the facts. The staffer may have gotten out over and ahead of her skiis.

Blogging that involves names of political parties/individuals, as I am reading on this article, should not be allowed today as they may have a tendency to sway voters. This is a critical time for our people. Please let the process be as untarnished as possible.

I agree 100%. It’s a silent form of intimidation. The candidates should vote and keep it moving – away from the polling area.

  10. HOW?! says:

Mrs. Stoutt-Igwe please also tell me how is it that people from the NDP CAMP got my personal cell number? It’s not just myself, but countless other people have been telling their stories about people calling their personal numbers on which was placed on their elections application forms. These people call to ask either for voting support or to ask if we (the voters) voted for the NDP rep(s). What is going on? How is this type of thing happening? NO OTHER PARTIES HAVE CALLED, JUST THE NDP. What’s going on in your office? People selling out our information?!
