One of three accused cops acquitted

Shawn Henry

Shawn Henry, one of the three interdicted police officers accused of conspiracy to steal has been acquitted of the charge.

Henry was freed of the charge on Friday (April 5) after his attorney Ian Wilkinson, a Queen’s Counsel (QC), successfully made what is known as a ‘no case submission’ before Justice Rajiv Persad.

The details of the submission were not outlined in open court. But QC Wilkinson told BVI News on Friday that the crux of the submission was that there was insufficient evidence to show that his client was involved in any conspiracy to steal.

That was the only charge against Henry.

Meanwhile, another of the accused cops, Simon Power, was also acquitted of one of two charges. Power was acquitted of ‘acquisition, possession or use of proceeds of criminal conduct’. Power was the only one among the accused trio charged with that offence. He was freed of that charged after his attorney Israel Bruce also made a successful no case submission.

Power as well as the third accused cop, Pamphil Prevost, both still stands accused of conspiracy to steal. Their trial is ongoing in the High Court.

Hence the reason why we should take such matters out of the hands of juries. Matters such as these are very complicated to understand and let’s face it, jurors often have a hard time
assessing the evidence that is placed before the court and without proper directions from the Judge they could be clueless. Often juries as ask to decide complicated areas of the law which means they could very well decide the direction of the law.

You’re not very observant, are you? It said a no case submission was made, therefore it was legal matters for the JUDGE ONLY to dem rule on. The jury were only ordered by the judge to return a verdict of Not Guilty.

You sound like one of those vexed police who didn’t progress in the force because your attitude bad, you lazy and expect to success based on your nationality. “Ask not what your country can do for you, but what you can do for your country”. Maybe its not too late to change, and if its so corrupt, maybe you should encourage your fellow citizens to join and clean make it clean, or would that rob you of something b***c about?

CAN YOU ALL REMEMBER THE T***R MURDER CASE WHEN THE FELLA TOLD THE JURY WHAT HE AND THE OTHERS DID AND THE PERSON WHO SENT THEM.

THE JURY SET THEM FREE. IS IT BECAUSE THEY FROM TORTOLA. MR OBSERVER IT IS PLAIN TO SEE THAT YOU CAN NOT UNDERSTAND OR YOU JUST HATE EXPATRIATES OR POLICE.

Once you are charged Labeled Accused or suspected of being a corrupt cop it’s a hard label to shake, even if you were aquitted. It’s an adversarial system and the mistrust the community have of law enforcement will not help shake that label. Good luck Mr. Henry. It will be a good think to seek redress and find employment elsewhere.
