Only D6 registered voters can get my free notary services

Sixth District representative Myron Walwyn has signalled that only registered voters of the constituency will be able to access his notary public services that will be offered once his constituency office opens on June 5.

“We’ll be providing free notarial and Commission of Oaths services – and that is only for residents of District 6. So if you have documents that need notarization – rather than going to pay $20 per page – you can come by our office and we’ll provide that service for you,” Walwayn explained in an interview with JTV.

Walwyn, who is also a lawyer, said he’s only offering that free service to his constituents because he doesn’t want to take business away from other professionals who offer notary services for a fee.

“What we don’t want is to interfere with the business community because this (notary services) is a business for other people. So we don’t want people coming from all over the place to the District 6 Office. This is a service that as a representative, as a notary public and a commissioner of oaths – I want to give to the residents of D6,” Walwayn explained.

He said his constituency office will use the voter’s list to determine whether individuals are actually from D6.

“The only way to know if you’re from D6 is to follow the voter’s list.”

Walwayn’s constituency office is set to offer wide-ranging services including employment services, provisions for seniors and a Spanish-speaker attendant to help with requests from hispanic residents in District 6.

Walwayn, a member of the Opposition, also said he plans to be at the office regularly so residents can make appointments to speak with him when they need to. In November of 2022, the House of Assembly approved a policy that provides funding for staffed constituency offices in each district. It is supposed to provide a space for elected leaders to meet with their constituents and better serve their needs.

If this is not illegal then I don’t what truly is going on with our laws of the land! How can this be seen as not influencing or ‘buying’ allegiance to this representative? This is no different than the ‘free’ clinic services the D5 rep. is pushing down his party supporters. Seems that these guys doing their own individual things without wider public outreach and compliance with what’s already established!

Help this make sense to me please!

The issue here is that his private interest(Legal firm) conflates with his public interest (District Rep.) Whilst all of his constituents may not understand the principle of conflict of interest he should. Not all of the services are conflated but certainly those that he provides as a lawyer or business owner in these areas. Who is responsible for looking into these things? At the least it is bad judgement on his part and he should reassess this approach.

    @This is not right.
When the district reps were giving out taxpayers dollars as part of their district funds it was not ‘vote buying’ or at least no one was crying out about that. Now one rep decides to use his own personal skills as a lawyer to help his constituents with some basic legal help, it is called vote buying. I wish every rep would offer something to the people that is not coming out of the treasury. Do these honorable men and women really have the people’s best interest at heart, or they only know how to buy votes? People, if you can save a few dollars in this inflation time by getting something important for free, don’t let haters stop you. I wish I was a district 6 voter.

Where is there any selfishness? Read exactly what he said and explained. He does not want to take away business from other professional Notary Publics that provide the service for a fee. Hence he is providing Pro bono services ONLY to the registered voters in his constituency. He didn’t stipulate only if you were a supporter not. He stated the registered voters as per the Voters List.
There are a lot of people in the district who needs and will benefit from all the services that he would be selflessly offering.
I don’t know if I would need any assistance at anytime but I sure would be offering my services in that office as soon as time permits.
Representatives in other districts maybe can look at what is being offered in D6 and formulate some initiatives that would be beneficial for their constituents, rather than when next election time comes, you deceive them with a white envelope with a little change or some other political gift. Stop dodging and hiding until the next election time comes around. Be constantly available.

What exactly do you want the Supervisor of Elections to do? Walwyn is no longer a candidate. Since May 18 he has a sworn member. With members being sworn the Supervisor has no authority. Walwyn offering free notarial services to his constituents is a matter for the residents. It is also a matter of perception if it’s vote buying that he is offering his skills for free. Don’t be upset that he thought about it. But if you want to look at perceived vote buying, God bless they took those grants out of the representatives hands because they used to tie assistance with them registering you to vote.

All you have to do is not be razzles and dazzled.

There are jobs in the Civil Service that was given to persons from overseas that could have been filled by some BVI Islanders.BVI Islanders should have protest against such prácticas. Its very unfair to the people of the Virgin Islands.

Hon Myron Walwyn did made some statements years ago that some BVI Islanders objected to, which they had a right.

Not sure what the issue is, all legislators are Commissoners of oath, and and cannot charge for their service by virture of their office. According to law, only lawyers and some senior oublic servants can be notary public. And those public servants charging big fees while still on govt oayroll. There is no conflict in Myron case, people just vex he only offering notary service for his constituents, that is a business decision, you want a passport form sign, find any politician, and they cannot charge.
