Opposition Leader denies being on quest for power

Opposition Leader Marlon Penn has denied being on a quest for power and has instead accused the government of digging a pit for the BVI through its own power-seeking behaviour.

“My care is for this country and the people of this country; not a quest for power,” Penn said during a House of Assembly sitting recently.

Penn made the statement against the backdrop that two serving members of the government — namely the Premier and Deputy Premier — have admitted to going to separate BVI governors to complain about various issues.

However, despite making these complaints under and about previous National Democratic Party (NDP) administrations, Governor Augustus Jaspert ironically chose to launch a Commission of Inquiry (COI) during the current administration‘s tenure.

“The old people always say, when you’re digging a hole for people, dig two,” Penn said.

The Opposition Leader urged the government to do some introspection by looking into the mirror and to resist from subliminal messages accusing Opposition members of also going to the governor to file complaints.

Penn said he would make statements he believes is necessary and will do so in public where he could be heard by everyone and not in private while talking politics with others.

Meanwhile, Premier Andrew Fahie refuted Penn’s assertions that his administration had dug any pit for the BVI in the short space of time that it had been in government.

“We didn’t dig no pit for this country, we only here two years going into three. What government could dig a pit for a country that deep?” Premier Fahie asked.

He argued that many of the issues that have been canvassed by the COI, have been embedded for years and noted that his administration had not been in power for 12 of the last 16 years as the NDP had been.

    • @confused - Hon. Penn Fan says:

Where is the confusion really? What makes Hon. Penn any less “Premier material” than anyone who has ran this country over the last 70yrs?

I’m not a Virgin Islander but have lived here for over 40 years in East End and have watched this young man grow and develop. If any one has what it takes to run this country it is this young man. He has certain perspective and qualities to me that makes him suited, he’s educated, connected with the people, intelligent and humble, all important for any leader. But the most important quality he has, is that he cares about people. So stop trying to belittle or call down your own people with your not so subtle self serving comment about “Premier Material” for Gods sake.

I see pulling and hauling so take your time. Some already have their pension 16 to 20 years ago. What are they coming back to prove?

  4. New Blood needed. says:

New blood is needed that is dedicated to improving the lives of the people and uplifting the country through trained political thinking.

Have had enough of those who see and intentionally run and become elected just to steal corrupt and otherwise financially enrich themselves.

So what if others before you have done it, that does not give you the moral or conscienable right to do the same. And we wonder why decent, politically qualified and able BVIslanders do not run for office.

Of the names above, i will narrow down to Ronnie, Collin, Myron and Fraser. Could add Dancia, but find her to class and uppity oriented.

Let’s get some folk with political science training, good established morals and not some fake christianity spirituality to run and lead this country out of th downward spiral it is in right now.
