Outgrown: SSB constructing new HQ, inks deal

The building that currently houses the SSB.

The Social Security Board (SSB) is building a new base of operations and Edwin Adams Architects has been selected to create the architectural designs and construction drawings for the project.

The SSB inked the deal with the architectural firm on Monday.

The new SSB headquarters will be built on Wickham’s Cay I.

Chairman of the Board, Ian Smith said the organisation has outgrown its current base of operations in Road Town.

“With expanding operations and the advent of the National Health Insurance, the space at Joshua Smith Building is insufficient, thus providing the urgent need for more space,” Smith explained in a media release.

Meanwhile, Edwin Adams Architects was selected to design the new building following a bidding process by the SSB.

40 years of experience

The firm is said to have more than four decades of experience.

“We appreciated your hard work and diligence in doing all the background work that was needed, and the schematic that was the winner by far in terms of submissions received,” Smith said while addressing the architectural firm after the bidding process.

According to the SSB media release, Edwin Adams Architects presented the Board with a modern building proposal that will ‘serve the needs of the organization for decades’.

The Board is yet to disclose the cost of the project.

We should also take a moment to recognise the success of the SSB. It has to be one of the best run public bodies in the BVI. Props to Ian Smith, Antoinette Skelton and their team.
