Over 700 children benefit from D9 back-to-school initiative

More than 700 children from the Ninth District benefitted from a back-to-school initiative spearheaded by D9 Representative Vincent Wheatley to provide primary school students with school supplies for the upcoming academic year.

The District Representative partnered with several organisations and individuals including the Rotary Club and Allington ‘Gumption’ Creque to bring the initiative alive.

Wheatley noted it has been a while since the event happened, but he was grateful that children could come out and benefit from the initiative.

“It is two years since we had this event. Today I am so happy to partner with companies such as Tortola Concrete, James Todman, Nagico, the Family of Rotary, and Lions Club to make this event possible. It is a day when we celebrate our kids. It is a fun day for the kids,” Wheatley said.

Creque noted this was the beginning of what he hopes to be a territory-wide initiative for primary school children.

“We started in the Ninth District, and we plan to go to all districts where every student in the primary schools of the BVI can receive a backpack,” Creque said.

Meanwhile, a representative from the Road Town arm of the Rotary Club said one of the focuses of Rotary is literacy and education and the club has always aided with events surrounding education.

“This is what we are doing here in Virgin Gorda. We are happy to support Vincent and his endeavour here because education is the key for our children in the future. We also have different drives in Tortola, but we are here to support Vincent and his endeavour here in Virgin Gorda,” the representative said.

Someone needs to do this for other district too. I really thought allington bags collection were for children throughout the BVI not district 9 alone. I could be very well wrong I not sure how he distribute them if all district gets too. But! There need to be more like him all around BVI especially when it’s for the children.

Oil Nut Bay has stepped up to the plate by renovating an entire primary school and donating promethean boards and more. Not saying that they shouldn’t do more, just saying that they have indeed contributed.

As it pertains to Moskito/Necker, Unite BVI has also contributed to the rebuilding of BFEC High. As I said before, I am not saying that their contributions should not be consistent. I’m just saying that we can’t knock them as though they haven’t given at all.

Don’t get me wrong the headline says district 9 I am only asking if this can be done for all districts.

  8. Mrs Tubman says:

Yep…it is imperative to teach and reinforce the reality of children of colour, their reality to entitled handouts for them the universal throwaways. Their parents’ roles are to seek out and to bestow for generational and universal continuity.

Do not use our children in your dolly tricks. They are our future and we need the best for them at all times. Re: this handout nonsense by Mrs. Tubman, were you or your people deprived of their humanity for a year? Well the majority of Caribbean people were enslaved for 400 years. All Our rights and the basic things WE did for Ourselves before down to Our language, religion names etc were stripped from US and WE were numbered with the cattle and horses. I guess, if you are caucasian, you will say, I was not apart of that, so why do blacks feel entitled? Most people I will hope raised their children to benefit humanity. Nonetheless, by virtue of our history alone I believe Blacks deserve better than handouts. education and health should be FREE. Can you quantify the damage WE endured? 186 years later, and SOME OF US have catapulted to the highest heights locally , regionally and internationally. Some of US are chasing Our tails following white lies and deception, WE know we are a peculiar people and we did not learn it from you, you would not want us to know THE TRUTH, because you fear retaliation, but vengeance belong to GOD. When a beast strikeout White has the answer for the destruction caused, but you do not perceive the brain damage done to generations of disenfranchised Blacks made in the image of GOD.

  11. @Maverick says:

Slavery stripped you of your pride and dignity. You are reduced to handouts and everlasting charity to the extent that your condition you claim and grasp as your earthly entitlement. Ready set to cuss and to carry on at the mere whisper of rising above to your rightful status as the original with Blessings unparalleled. Me an mine,we gone this side ,bypassing the crumbs of charity thrown to keep * in their place, Pity allyo so.

  12. Maverick says:

My message is do not dis blacks who are not able at this point to achieve better. Be an empathetic caring guide in helping such persons becoming the best at what they are able to do in transforming their situation. Remember: a chain is as strong as its weakest link, and we are our brothers keeper. We cannot all be the same, but we need each other and are equally important. The poor does not initiate change, but the rich and powerful; hence intentionally or otherwise the less fortunate or less energetic suffer more and are left behind and treated as dumb or problematic. Let us seek to truly love each other and be kinder and gentler in dealing with humanity.
