Penn: No need for governor to get involved in Bank of Asia matter
Eighth District Representative Marlon Penn has stated that there was no need for the Opposition Leader to invite Governor Daniel Pruce to investigate the Bank of Asia matter.
Recently, Opposition Leader Myron Walwyn issued a call for Governor Pruce to step in and investigate the matter, in which the territory will likely lose some $5 million reportedly invested in the bank after it was instructed to wind down its operations.
But Penn said involving the Governor was not necessary at this stage, as local institutions exist to carry out such investigations.
“We have to use the vehicles that are available to us, an internal audit could investigate this matter,” Penn said on the NDP radio show.
Host John Cline then asked: “But why do you believe the Leader of the Opposition called for the governor and not the Auditor General to investigate?”
“I don’t know why,” Penn answered. “There’s no need for the governor to get involved in our business. And if we want to talk about maturity, we have to use the vehicles that are afforded to us and not call for the governor to get involved in our business.”
Members of the NDP and some sections of the public have criticised Walwyn for what they describe as an aggressive and arrogant approach in his dealings with the Dr Natalio Wheatley administration. Others, however, have praised the Opposition Leader, saying he has brought clarity to the issues passing through the House of Assembly.
In the meantime, it remains unclear whether the Governor’s Office will initiate an investigation into the Bank of Asia matter. Premier Wheatley has said the territory must wait until local regulators complete the liquidation process to determine the final fate of the $5 million.
The deposit was reportedly made between December 2024 and April 2025 — after the bank’s owners filed for bankruptcy in January 2025 and its assets were frozen globally.
The public continues to call for accountability and transparency as the government distances itself from any wrongdoing.

An internal audit is internal. The public would not see what that report. Anyone, even the cleaner, who worked internal audit department will tell you this. The public deserves to know the story behind putting 5M of their tax dollars in a bank that was falling apart. Marlon as usual playing politics and trying to contradict Myron but I agree with Myron. It needs an investigation and the governor has the right agencies under him to do the investigation. How many audits have we had that just go no where but on a shelf and nothing ever happens? Somebody needs to be help to account for this.
Marlon is a likable fella, but he strikes me as someone who “go along to get along” type of guy. He’s not a doer. Sad!
Natalio called for an internal audit because he know that the report from the internal audit will come back to him when it is finished. That report will never see the light of day and Marlon was stupid enough to buy that. Joker! SMH

What about Myron trying to get to the truth for the public to see what really went into the decision to put 5M into a collapsing bank? Doesn’t the public deserve to know?
It is better to keep your mouth shut and make people suspect that you are a fool than to open your mouth and remove all doubt. If anyone is playing politics it is Marlon. The politics of trying to make Myron look wrong with his suggestion for cheap political points which he would not gain. Internal audits are for internal government things. An investigation would give you far more information than audit ever could.
Nobody is trying to make Myron look bad. Myron himself chastised Andrew Fahie for the same thing, his words are there and clear. Nobody is making him look any way. Time will deal with those that think they are smarter than everyone else.

Let us completely forget about the fact that 5M of our tax dollars will be lost by the actions of the Premier. Let us forget the state of the roads, water, seniors, and people every single day struggling to make ends meet. Let’s forget how that money could have helped those situations. The BVI will never get any better with citizens like you in it.

A perfect example of why we need new people in politics. These guys all protecting each other to hide their dirty dealings from the public. It is time to stop this. Change their ways or direct control from UK for a while to fix this as was recommended.
No UK involvement in nothing, we can fix whatever needs to be fixed.
We are not children of a lesser God, nor are we dim, dull and incapable of taking care of our own business.
The call for our former slavers’ children to come in, take over our stuff and rule us as a guise of fixing something is a fallacy, an idea rooted in brain washed foolery, and decades of non evolutionary thinking.

The FSC will work on the bankruptcy side. Who pressed the button, made the call, authorized the transaction, that moved the money into the Bank of Asia account?

Your name fits. Problem is the FSC, courts, and the VDIC will be looking into a different issue, mainly, taking the bank through bankruptcy. I want to know how the people of the BVI got robbed of 5 million dollars. There could very well be a crime scene with this transaction. Which agency is looking into that? All we’ve gotten so far is no one knows nothing and no one directed the transfer, but then why did it happen?
Sure feels like a lot of people are tied up in the broader Bank of Asia mess. Way too much silence and far too much protecting one another, including calling for internal investigations. Who went on that trip to Hong Kong in February??
