Persona non grata? Dr Pickering not on NDP’s table — Penn
Opposition Leader Marlon Penn has indicated that Dr Kedrick Pickering was not factored into considerations for the National Democratic Party’s (NDP) electoral slate at the upcoming national polls.
According to Penn, the NDP, which he now leads, has other persons in consideration for the District 7 candidacy.
While appearing by phone on the Morning Braff radio show, Penn stated: “At the end of the day, we have a democracy. Dr Pickering, if he chooses to run, he can choose to run.”
He continued: “As far as I know, the organisation [of] which I am in charge, and we’re moving forward towards, we have someone, we have a process, a transparent process for putting persons on the ticket and that process will soon commence.”
Dr Pickering, the Opposition Leader disclosed, is not involved in the process at this time.
When pressed on whether there was a contradiction in his statement, Penn explained that the NDP is governed by a constitution.
“There’s a constitutional process that governs how our candidates are selected. I don’t dictate to our organisation, how candidates are selected. I have my position, I have my opinion, I have one vote just like all the persons that have a vote in that process,” Penn said.
He added: “At this time, there are two or three persons who have indicated within our circle that they want to run for that district and when the vote comes up, the party will decide on that.”
Pressed again on whether he would personally consider having Dr Pickering back on the NDP team as an option, Penn restated that the party already has its options.
“He’s not on the table — Dr Pickering. We have our options on the table moving forward. We’ve been moving forward for the last two-plus years as an organisation,” he said.
Penn’s comments come just one day after Dr Pickering announced his return to active politics, after being defeated in the previous elections by the incumbent candidate, Dr Natalio Wheatley.
During his announcement, Dr Pickering said he was willing to work with any team once this is what voters in the district want him to do. Dr Pickering had served for 20 unbroken years as the District 7 Representative with the NDP before deciding to run as an independent candidate at the 2019 polls.

On what basis is Penn the leader of NDP? Myron was Chairman and resigned this capacity after the loss. The last time a Chairman resigned they had internal elections so why not this time?
