PHOTO OF THE DAY: ‘Mask Movement’

This photo captured by BVI News reporter Esther Durand is a glaring reminder of the aptly-termed ‘new normal’ being experienced in the British Virgin Islands and the rest of the world.

Residents have affixed a surgical mask on to the face of the statue of the late local activist, Noel Lloyd.

Neither the persons who affixed the mask nor their intentions for doing so are known to our news centre. But whether it was done out of jest or a deeper expression/reflection of what society is today, it shows that the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic is still happening.

During this time, government has mandated that all persons exercise the proper precautions to help prevent any spread of the virus. One of those precautions is that residents are mandated to wear masks when in public places.

At the time of this publication, the BVI had eight recorded cases of the disease — one of whom died from coronavirus-related symptoms. One of the territory’s four main islands, Jost Van Dyke, is currently under seven days of 24-hour lockdown to prevent any potential spread of the virus.

The lockdown is in response to credible reports local authorities received days ago that a passenger who recently departed the BVI for St Vincent and the Grenadines tested positive for the virus on arrival. Contact-tracing led health officials back to Jost Dyke and all residents on that island are now being tested for the virus.

Up to the time this article was published, there were no known active cases of COVID-19 in the territory.

It is time for a mask or some tape over the mouths of a few social commentators (aka big noisy mouths with nothing interesting to say but who need the publicity). Two men of the cloth and a man of the taxi spring to mind.

While some people may see this as funny…I believe that it is disrespectful. We need to show for our national symbols….Today was a mask, next time will be a panty or breast holder…and then it will not be funny….PLEASE LET’S NOT CELEBRATE THIS!!!

some people find this offensive, some people don’t. personally, i have my opinion, but what i think is irrelevant. the best way to settle this debate is to put a mask on Sir Olva George’s statue and gauge the reaction. if the majority don’t find it offensive, then let’s move on. if it is indeed found offensive, then….

Interestingly you mentioned Sir Olva George’s statue… I have always been offended about parking in the plaza. We could not go to any other’s country and park on their plaza honoring their hero.

Just grow up and understand that we are all in a very stressful time with this world pandemic. Really important to rally together, forget politics lookout for one another. Follow guide lines by WHO and we will then be healthy enough to go at each other again…blog blog blog.
