The grand reopening of UP’s Cineplex in Road Town was nothing short of spectacular.

Friday’s reopening featured the local premiere of Marvel Universe’s latest blockbuster, Black Panther.

And with major support from telecommunications giant Flow and other local sponsors, operators of UP’s seemingly spared no expense for patrons to have a vivid Afrocentric experience.

The sound of live African drumming could be heard as patrons entered the facility.

That preceded an African dance routine from Firebird Studios, which is based on the ground floor of the Cineplex.

Several patrons also came dressed in colourful African-wear to complement the evening’s theme.

Leading up the start of the movie, patrons had the opportunity to mingle, take photographs, and indulge the in free food and drinks provided during the cocktail hour.

And as for the movie, it was simply described as a ‘must-see’.

Below are highlights of the event:

  1. Oh please says:

Dem dress like Africans to go see ah movie. But dress like a sket to go church. It’s crazy how many people follows of the wrong hype. Only in Tola follow faction …

  2. VILander says:

Funny how we didn’t know being Afrykan was cool until a white man promoted it to us.

We should always be consciously African peoples. There is no west indian but a colonized slave.

    • Hah says:

This has nothing to do with the “white man.” This is the first big budget movie with primarily black cast, director etc. The focus was being a positive movie to showcase black excellence. My issue is some people actually think there is a Wakanda on the map and are only dressing up to follow the hot trend right now.

      • VILander says:

Support the small budget black films too. There actually is a Wakanda in Africa but they don’t have vibranium. And in the movie wakanda is based off of Ethiopia the land the white man never colonized but did occupy for a short time.

  3. Stoops says:

    Which white man was this?!

    • Anonymous says:

if you do some research. You will find out that the Production company responsible for this film is actually disney which was founded and staffed by a primarily white staff.
So figuratively and literaly speaking, yes, there is a ‘white man’.

  4. Fun! says:

I thought it was really good clean family fun. We all had a great experience with the opening and the Firebird Dance Studio performances. Loved the movie and thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. Kudos Elton!

  5. White man says:

The white man is the Disney company and Marvel who funded the movie.

  6. Sam the Man says:

Black Panther is a terrific film and great to see such talented actors I loved it’s underlying theme of wanting to “makes difference” and share knowledge/ resources for the benefit of man kind 10 out of 10 in my opinion

  7. Thoughtful Sailor says:

If Flow spent their money fixing their service, maybe they wouldn’t have to re-brand themselves every few years. Good movie, though.

  8. Hm says:

Good thing this aint the states cause no white kids would be drumming or dancing. It would be considered ridiculing black people/culture snatching…probably a few a dem Pan african types not pleased..oh well.

  9. Wendy says:

    This is all toosplendiferous…

Photo of the baby on Mommy’s lap, as she drums..precious!

  10. Expect to sit says:

Everyone going to see the movie expect to sit for two hours. It is worth every bit of it. Enjoy BVI.

  11. L says:

My this is this. The Black Panther movie, which is about a super hero, has nothing to do with the Black Panther Party. That’s why I don’t understand why they are dressing in African attire to go see the movie. The Black Panther Party was about fighting for the rights of blacks in the United States.

    • @L says:

Actually, the character was originated by Ta-Nahisi Coates whose father was a Black Panther. Wakenda was designed using the charitable/Utopian ideals of the party. so….there’s that.

  12. Ausar says:

The take away from the movie as I see it is that white folk and alot of others are no longer going to the movies to pay to see black women folk with relaxed hair.

That hairstyle has been on its death bed for quite some time and now the white world in its collective economics have shown so similarly

Lets see if the global African female collective have caught on and decide that now is the time for them to get their hair in order-natural order, that is.

  13. Phoenix says:

Why did I expect us to stop the nasty, snarky judgmental awfulness that is now our VI persona in order to come together for this ONE wonderful, uniting media event? I’m honestly ashamed.

    @Ausar- Amen!

  14. Hm says:

This movies is badically modelef of Nuwabian cult thats been around since the 60s.Black planet, black power black aliens that created the white man to serve them(classfied subhumans)that ran away and now are a pain in the blackmans arse.Do some research online..geez this Disney making a token afrofuturistic lets make them happy
..and lots of money.Good movie still.
