PHOTOS: Culture and heritage on display in East End

As the emancipation festivities for 2023 wind down, residents and visitors got a taste of old-time Virgin Islands culture at the cultural and heritage village at the Greenland field on Wednesday, August 9.

Several antiquated artefacts that Virgin Islanders used generations ago were on display, giving patrons a true blast from the past.

From domestic items such as the rotary dial telephone to modes of transportation like the donkey cart, people who roved the village got a real sense of how old-time Virgin Islanders lived. They even got to live part of the experience themselves with the donkey cart rides, among other things, on offer.

There was also entertainment for small children who were kept occupied on a mini merry-go-round, bounce-about, etc.

Here are some highlights from the event:

  10. Bravo EE/LL says:

Though poorly promoted, it appeared to be a wholesome cultural activity with a good effort by those in attendance to bring back the true meaning of the Emancipation Festival. I look forward to seeing the event grow and supported by all.

  11. IN says:

They forget to display something indicating how most people indigenous to the EE area are inbred and practice inc3$t. That’s true BVI culture over on their end.

Not forgetting the private islands too let them contribute too that is Scrub island falls under district 8 and buck island falls under district 7. Lets dress up the place with flags. Pictures used at greenland fields can be place around the districts so persons don’t have to go to the ground to read. Have a little motorcade depicting all those cultural stuff shown at greenland. Even boat owners can have a little something and show case mini boats etc. Each restaurant can make a little BVI snacks and share around in the community.
