PHOTOS: Revellers unwind at East End Rise & Shine

Scenes from this year’s East End leg of the Rise & Shine tramp.

Dozens upon dozens of revellers gathered early Wednesday morning for the East End, Tortola leg of the Rise & Shine Tramp held as part of the annual emancipation festivities.

Paraders followed their favourite bands as they gyrated their way through the streets to the infectious sounds of VI soca music. And in usual fashion, water and body paint was used to colour the event.

But not everyone present at event immersed themselves in the frolicking. Many took in the sights and sounds from the sidelines.

BVI News photographer Andre ‘Shadow’ Dawson captured some highlights:

Well, the pics seem to indicate that the people enjoyed themselves.

Yet, the activity itself has lost its true meaning for celebrating.

Giving reverence to our ancestors for the relief they finally felt, and those who did not live to feel it, freedom was a sacred feeling, and it should be given that moment, along with festive the side of course, minus the nudity.

As for the music, well, we have forgotten how to make good music in the V.I., plain and simple.

We make garbage, filter it through expensive speakers, add some none sensical words to it with a whole bunch ah noise and call it music.

The days of the great music have long since been gone.

I can only speak for my generation.

    Fletcher and the—-??

    Vibrations

    Bad Ones

    Dells

    Those monsters out of Trinidad

Dominica had a good one to: The Swinging Stars

Number one in Tola was of course, bar none before, now nor since, that was:

The VINO MAR SONICS!! What a Band!

Featuring young brilliant musical such as:
    Tommy, Tony, Geese
Fitzroy, Eustace Jack, Stan, Ken, Mick

That band was not good, it was FORMIDABLE!!

No band wanted to compete with it IN THE DAYS OF BBRASS-O-RAMA- neither Vibrations, Milo and the Kings, Swinging Stars, nobody.

So, they would give the home country, no name calling, after the musical whop a**. That’s life though. Never is it fair most times.

  4. My bad. says:

Do excuse me folks and old fans of VINO MAR.

I failed or forgot to mention one of the major founders and devotees of the VINO MAR SONICS, a musical genius, key boardist and recording artist out of St. Kitts, The late Mr. Jeffery Brooks.

An prolific musical talent to his band, and a gift he was to earth. May God continue to cradle his magnificent soul.
