Pickering running independent? Launches campaign February 12

Pickering

While there has been no official word from the man himself, recent developments suggest that Dr Kedrick Pickering is heading into the general elections as an independent candidate.

While there were speculations that Dr Pickering was poised to join the Ronnie Skelton-led Progressive Virgin Islands Movement (PVIM), a Facebook page called ‘The Committee To Re-elect Dr Kedrick Pickering’ has been created that suggests otherwise.

Dr Pickering is seen branding purple and white political colours which are different from the PVIM’s signature blue and white. The only other established political party with an opening for Dr Pickering’s seat of interest is the Julian Fraser-led Progressives United. But, that party’s political colour is orange.

And based on a campaign poster on the aforesaid social media page — which is believed to have been created within the last 24 hours — Dr Pickering will be officially launching his campaign for elections on February 12.

Dr Pickering, who is seeking re-election in the Seventh Electoral District will host the launch of his campaign at The Stickett in Long Look on the eastern end of Tortola.

“Bring Doc home again,” the poster reads.

Before this seeming move to go off on his own, Dr Pickering served some two decades under the National Democratic Party (NDP) with Premier Dr D Orlando Smith at the helm.

His breakaway from the NDP comes as Dr Smith retires from representational politics and while Myron Walwyn has taken over leadership of the party.

Dr Pickering, a founding member of the NDP, has always declared is undying loyalty to Premier Smith.

Interesting strategy. He must be hoping that neither main party wins an overall majority, so he can join a coalition in exchange for a senior cabinet post. Maybe even Premier?

    Good plan and interesting strategy!

I just wonder, if you had put as much thought and effort into running the seventh district all these years, would the district and its voters still be in the precarious predicament we are in today?

I would be grateful if you could let us know What do you think you will be able to deliver in years 20-24, as that you couldnt in years 1- 20?

Seems to me he is confident he is going to pull this off. He is after that Premier seat. Seems to me he feels that because he is welled traveled and hob nob with the who’s who it will be easy for him.

Former First Lady, Senator and Secretary of State Hilary Roadham Clinton, 2016 Democratic presendential candidate, made a costly mistake on the Rust Belt states of Wisconsin, Michigan and Pennsylvania. Assuming that they were Blue States and already in the bag, she campaigned very little in them. She counted the votes before they were cast. It was a costly error in judgement; President Trump narrowly won the three states by less than 100,000 votes.

Is Dr. Hon Deputy Premier and MLNR Kedrick Pickering, long-serving D-7 Rep, making a similar mistake? The election is on 25 February yet he is officially announcing his re-election candidacy on 12 February. To date, there are two other candidates, ie, Diego Penn of NDP and Dr. Natalio “Sowande” Wheatley of the VIP. However, on Nomination Day on 11 February, there could be other candidates competing for the D-7.

Is Dr. Pickering behaving confidently that the seat is already in the bag so he is just going through the motion? Is this a bad strategy? Can his low key campaign effort back fire and turn voters off, causing them to cast votes for other candidates? Should Dr. Pickering mount an aggressive, all out campaign ?The conventional wisdom is that votes should not be counted before they are cast.

Anybody who votes for Dr. Pickering is misguided. This man has done very little for our country over the last 20 years. He speaks a good game but that’s it. He has a ministry for two terms. Can you tell me what he has done besides waste money on brabdywine bay and spend 10m on the airport study? Have you ever gone to see him for help? It’s quite an experience.
