Pickering selected to represent OTs at upcoming int’l conference

Political leaders from various British Overseas Territories (OT) have selected BVI Deputy Premier, Dr Kedrick Pickering to represent them at an upcoming high-level meeting known as the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC).

The UNFCCC will be held in December.

“I am honoured by the Overseas Territories’ vote of confidence in me and the British Virgin Islands government to represent them at the UNFCCC,” the Deputy Premier said after the selection.

“We have gained a wealth of experience over the years at UN meetings in relation to small island developing states, climate change, and sustainable development which we will bring to bear to advance the cause of the territories,” he added.

Overseas Territories decided on Dr Pickering when they met in London this week for a joint ministerial conference hosted by the United Kingdom government.

Among the things discussed at this week’s meeting was the importance of ‘constitutional reform’ and the ‘need for a new UK-OT relationship’ following Britain’s decision to impose public registers of beneficial ownership on the Overseas Territories.

Discussions also involved the impacts Britain’s impending exit from the European Union (EU) will have on Overseas Territories such as the BVI.

“This was a very useful meeting for the BVI,” Dr Pickering said.

“We are aligned with fellow Overseas Territories on the need to shift the relationship between the UK and OTs to ensure the constitutional position of the territories are safeguarded and improved where needed. We look forward to working together closely on this agenda in the weeks ahead.”

Editor’s Note:

Effectively, the EU is a bloc of 28 countries that allow the free flow of goods and people between member countries. As a British territory, the BVI benefits from a number of EU trade agreements.

There could be trouble ahead electing such a firebrand for this diplomatic role? “Lets divorce from the UK and declare war on them” – really smooth diplomatic talk! ….

  2. Total waste says:

nope…we don’t know how to be fair or positive here, NEGARTIVITY is the watch word for us. We cannot and will not celebrate anyone’s strength. It’s amazing to watch!

this is the same man who wanted to build a golf course on the middle of Anegada, one of the most unique and unspoilt environments of the Caribbean!

So which is it. Aren’t tired of everybody crying about no money no tourism. And ALSO crying about tourism that brings money. That’s called being a hater and it is iseless and unattractive. Especially to investment. But hey, the way you hate on expats and other Caribbean islands this is no surprise. Hater gonna hate as the saying goes. For the record if you put a golf course in the middle of anegada (which nobody visits other than to drive across) then you’d have a new island to compete with the upscale market in VG. I’d just stay with the hate though if that’s your thing hahahahaha

Some new windows for him to stare out of.

  7. Janice says:

The situation where the BVI is wasting time and money on the communist hoax of climate change is worse than what individual represents your country. When I visited last year Tortola was a trash dump. Clean up the island . Forget the elitists dream of works domination through the farce of climate change.

Join Jeff Bezos and Tim Cook and Mark Zuckerberg and Larry Page and Sergey Brinn. Advance to high tech industry. Invest time and money and energy into the high tech industry. All of this political talk about divorcing the UK would only make the British Virgin Islands into a poor, under developed third world nation. What sense does it make to start war with the United Kingdom when you British Virgin Islanders should be focusing on global world standards. The world we live in is in the Jetson age. We are living like the Jetsons, so why not join in with the rest of the countries in the world that wants to live in the Jetson age and forget about stupid politics and starting a war with the United Kingdom.
