PLM announces Clifton Forbes as D3 candidate

The People’s Leadership Movement (PLM) has announced retired public officer Clifton Forbes as its candidate for the Third Electoral District in the next general election.
PLM leader and former legislator Mark Vanterpool announced Forbes’ candidacy on September 10, describing him as an experienced educator and construction professional.
“Clifton Forbes brings a wealth of experience in education and construction to his candidacy — exactly the kind of practical, proven expertise we need in someone representing the people of the Third District,” Vanterpool stated.
Forbes has more than three decades of experience in technical and vocational education and training and the construction industry. A certified automotive technician, he began his career as a vocational educator at BVI High School, now Elmore Stoutt High School.
He taught Automotive Technology and Craft, Design and Technology, including metalwork, woodwork, technical drawing and basic electricity.
Forbes later served as an assistant principal at the Virgin Islands School of Technical Studies before retiring from the public service. He subsequently entered the construction industry, where he works as a site supervisor, using his experience in blueprint reading and site supervision.
The PLM said Forbes has advocated for expanded technical and vocational training, including establishing a dedicated vocational campus that offers young people across the territory practical training in various trades.
“I have spent my life preparing young people for the world of work and a brighter future. Now I want to bring that same commitment as I seek to represent the people of the Third District and to contribute directly to the development of the wider Virgin Islands,” Forbes stated.
“This is about rolling up our sleeves and getting things done, the same way I’ve approached every classroom and every job site,” he added.
The announcement follows Vanterpool’s confirmation that he will contest the Fourth District under the PLM banner. The Third District is currently represented by Deputy Premier Julian Fraser, who retained the seat at the April 2023 general election.
“I am proud to stand with the People’s Leadership Movement and with Mark Vanterpool,” Forbes stated. “I have watched his performance for years, as a businessman who has built and delivered in the private sector, and as a government minister who got real projects done for this country.”
Meanwhile, Vanterpool described Forbes as “a strong addition” to the PLM. “Our candidate drive continues, and the people of the Virgin Islands can expect further announcements,” Vanterpool stated.

I don’t know Mr. Forbes too well and I’m sure he’s a irie person but if we are going to keep it 100, Aaron has represented this the 3rd District and himself in an impressive manner time and time again.
He shows up and is consistently there. I see a man that will do well with the opportunity to represent us in the house of assembly and he deserves the opportunity to.
I have nothing against Mr. Forbes but Aaron has worked hard for this opportunity and as a community we ought to reward that man for sticking it out with us.

Showing up consistently and remaining involved in the community deserve recognition. However, we have to stop treating elected office as a reward for persistence or for going through the motions of running for office. The public needs representatives whose experience equips them to address the problems we face.
In Mr. Forbes’ case, he brings lived experience in an area that is critical to our children’s future: practical skills development. Our young people need opportunities to become skilled, capable and economically independent. They need pathways into meaningful work, opportunities to build businesses, and the ability to earn a decent living from what they can do.
If we are serious about saving our children, we must place greater value on people who understand how to help them develop those capabilities. That experience deserves serious consideration when we assess what a candidate can contribute to the Territory.
Every candidate should be judged on their record, competence and ability to turn experience into meaningful public service. Having worked hard for an opportunity to hold office does not, by itself, establish that someone is best equipped to serve. The deciding question must be what our people stand to gain from electing them.
Don’t do that no don’t do that. As someone that taught Aaron at th college, this young man is well rounded and graduated as a top 3 male in his program. He was a well respected educator and one of the best male teachers in this country. Do not try to stain this man regardless of what you may perceive. Every political season you all do this to satisfy your own egos but there’s more with him than against.
I am emotionally proud of the way this brother has carried himself with class and distinction in every way. A cultural ambassador representing this country and he loves this country.
I don’t mind you all focusing on who you wish to represent but do not drag this man’s name like he ain’t a proven son of this soil. You all need to stop dragging all candidates to boost up others. It’s killing our country.
At HLSCC, we are proud that he came from our institution and we will look forward to him being great as a leader.

I don’t know him and based on people’s views about him so far, he doesn’t sound very promising. Why not Aaron is the question. I say give the young man a chance. I do not think people will regret it. From what I can see, he truly loves his district and the country generally. He is a man who represents. I mean, he even represents the culture in the music, he seems to have passion, a real heart and fresh ideas and let’s be real. he is not thinking about a retirement plan right now. I think he is more interested in serving. His consistency over the years speaks volumes. Anyway, end of the day, is whatever you the people want.
