‘Police in Paradise’ video producers had consulted BVITB — Governor

Governor John Rankin has expressed disappointment in the viral and controversial “Police In Paradise” video but noted the producers had a consultation with the BVI Tourist Board.

Ahead of this revelation from the governor, Tourism Director Clive McCoy had condemned the video and said the Tourist Board is preparing to do damage control.

Not only has there been condemnation of the video but some have even called for the resignation of Commissioner Mark Collins who seemed to have sanctioned the filming of the production. But it appears the governor, who has portfolio responsibility for the police force, is not prepared to go that far at this time.

“What I do know is that I have made very clear already is that the content in the video was clearly inappropriate and it should not have made its way into the public domain,” Rankin said.

“The fact that it did, the police commissioner has made it clear in his apology in that respect and I accept his apology. Regarding the filming, my understanding is that there were some consultations with the tourism board. I don’t have the exact details of that but if any crimes were committed, that should be investigated but I do not have evidence to believe that is the case. But if the evidence, it should be investigated,” the Governor added.

He also said he does not want the video to distract from what he described as the excellent work and positive contributions the Royal Virgin Island Police Force officers and the Commissioner of Police make every day in tackling crime and making sure the territory is a safe place to live, work, and visit.

Be careful of what is filmed

Governor Rankin further said the lesson from the video is that in the modern age, people must be careful about what they put on video and the perception it might have.

“As soon as something is put onto video and is available electronically, the risk of it becoming widely available is high and the lesson is we must be careful about what we put on video and the Commissioner is looking precisely to that issue as he said in his statement,” Rankin said.

The governor had previously noted he understood the concerns raised over the video and he had spoken to the Commissioner of Police, Mark Collins.

“[The video] was sent to him unedited as a first cut and is unsuitable as a promotional video and therefore will not be used. The Commissioner is looking into how the video ended up in the public domain before it was reviewed and will keep the Governor informed of any developments,” the Governor said.

This is where I don’t approve of this governor! Governor you need to pack up and leave. Why the h**l you have to make reference to them consulting tourist board if your intentions were not d**ning for the BVI????
    .
You may have consult with them but you did not show the video. You may have told them that you are planning on making a video clip for promo but can you confirm that you share it with them before it even got out???

You are a man of confusion Governor. You need to be reasonable and have compassion if your intentions were not negative for the betterment of the country!

Even if approval is given to shoot a video by the BVITB’s Film Commission:

      1. There should be a clause in the application and approval that ascertains the production does not negatively impact the BVI or portray criminal activity.

      2. That production should be previewed by BVITB prior to being released to the public

      3. We understand that it was not the final video and the officer that leaked it should be reprimanded with removal from the force since it breaches confidentiality.

      4. This video is NO DIFFERENT than approval being given by BVITB for that prisoner up on the hill’s record label to shoot videos in the BVI rapping about inflicting murder and promoted by that local orange cellular network company with interviews being conducted with the so-called rapper as well as shared and promoted by MANY IN THE PUBLIC INCLUDING THOSE WHO WARMING CHURCH SEATS THOUGH THAT DOES NOT MAKE YOU A FOLLOWER OF CHRIST.

Just as I thought. A smoke screen for what is really the problem here in the BVI. The unintelligent ranting and raving over their bad deeds. Thank you governor for clearing up the matter and acting to ensure that whomever the culprit that leak such confidential information is dealt with. If our leaders both spiritual and political should follow suit their that will be hope for the future.

Why is everyone viewing this as PR faux pas? It’s recruiting vid to encourage folks to want to become a part of the exciting RVIPF! Walking a beat or adopting the guise of “Supercop’ isn’t exactly I-wanna-be-a-police-officer stuff. We sell the sizzle and the aroma of the steak-on-the-grill, not the steak itself.

Does it show what police have to deal with? Yes.

Anything to discredit the VI and marginalize the local people as corrupt when the producers of the video are the real demons here. Why the clip of an ongoing murder investigation is recorded in this malicious video? I think Mark Collins have some questions to answer?

Ooh such a rebel. Only in the VI can a short video clip of a crime cause more outrage than the crime itself.
Here we keep our murderers well protected but if there is a hint of a white person having any connection to any small issue, the outrage goes up ballistic.
PSA: There’s no conspiracy to make us look bad to keep us down.
They don’t give a sh’t about the BVI – the UK politicians, UK population, ‘white people’ all over the world – no one gives a damn about us just like you don’t give a damn about any other small island populations 1000s of miles from here.
It’s just easier for us to claim ‘they’ are out to get us. Especially when it’s we committing the very obvious and disgusting sins.

  15. Independence is the answer says:

There is too much confusion in this place. I long forthe days when the population was not so huge. Now we have so many people trying to fit in a small space and it is getting uncomfortable that every body is at each other’s throat. If we go independent most people will move on and look for greener patures. We then will have peace again

With the leadership we have, the place would implode within weeks if they tried to go independent. People fleeing in droves, BVIslanders and expats alike, leaving it a ghost town. But then again that’s probably what you want.

It’s people from those independent places running from there, abandoning for bread anywhere else and mucking up everywhere they go like a plague.
It is not the status of a land mass,it is the cultural habits and morals of people which will mash up a place.

Video producers consulted BVITB but no one from Tourist Board is on it. That was basicly a police video. Stop trying to fool the public

    • @Common Sense says:

The job of a Tourist Board is to encourage visitors to its country.
Consultation with the tourist Board would have garnered comments suggestions criticism revisions etc to the content of the video.
The video, at the time of its theft and subsequent worldwide unauthorized public screening was incomplete and unedited.
Whether or not the Tourist Board made suggestions for editing/ revision has not yet been revealed by the Commissioner.
We can surmise that in addition to a selected few members of the VI Police the video was seen and possibly in the posession of employee(s) of the Tourist Board.

  27. Truth says:

I didn’t see anything untruthful in the video. If the shoe fits, wear it. BVI has been turning into a criminal infested cesspool. I’ve spent over 25 years here watching blind eyes turned the lhr way for too long. You reap what you sow. Fahie is the poster boy for what ails the BVI.

The responsibility of the tourist board is to encourage visitors to the country. Reviewing photos and writings to safe guard that mission does not warrant them a cameo appearance in the video.

  29. @@common sence says:

Exactly, the responsibility of the tourist booard is to encourage visitors to the shores. So why would that type of video be sanctioned by Tourist Board? Also the head Cop said it was to recruit officers to the fource. All of a sudden it become a Tourist board responsibility. Oh please we getting our axxes woped front back and center. Where and who said that it was sanctioned by the tourist board?????and that it is the tourist Board responsibility….where are you getting this…Making up stuff in an effort to shirk responsibility and place blame is a habitual trait that is self defeating and a sign of dishonesty and immaturity. The consult with the Tourist Board was simply a professional courtesy and an indication of his sincerity. We do not know the input,if any from the TB .

The tourist board has not issued a response and the Commish has not indicated the result of the consultation.

  31. Brinda says:

Look at the responses to the blogs. I keep saying that the UK has people blogging to affect the minds of BVi people. Do not take these people lightly. We all know that the governor and the commissioner are not telling the truth.

  32. Patio says:

Why would the commissioner need to consult tourist board for a training video? The key people at the tourist board have stated that they know nothing about this video. The issue is no longer the video, it’s now the cover up. If the commissioner could bend the truth on something this simple how can he ever be trusted to deal fairly with the matters that will come before him. How can the corrupt seek to address the corruption that they have claimed, without proof, exists in the BVI?

  33. Keep it up says:

We see you governor! We see you! You take us for idiots. You will see how BVI people handle things. Continue.

  34. Riddick says:

So what if the TB was conculted? Governor please. Don’t p**s on the Virgin Islands people and say it is rain. Wheel and do not come again.
