Police, prison deploy mobile CCTV near Balsam Ghut

The Royal Virgin Islands Police Force and His Majesty’s Prison Service have deployed a mobile CCTV unit near HM Prison Balsam Ghut as part of a joint effort to strengthen security and deter unlawful activity.

The surveillance unit will monitor the area surrounding the prison and provide an additional layer of security. Officials said its visible presence should help deter suspicious activity, including attempts to introduce prohibited items into the facility.

The initiative expands existing security measures and forms part of continued collaboration between the police and prison authorities. It will also support intelligence sharing, efforts to prevent criminal activity and measures to protect prison officers, prisoners and the wider community.

“The security of HM Prison is an important part of protecting the wider Virgin Islands community. This deployment demonstrates the RVIPF’s commitment to working alongside HM Prison Service to deter criminal activity, support the security of the prison and safeguard the public,” Commissioner of Police Richard Ullger stated.

Superintendent of Prisons Jay Kendall welcomed the deployment and thanked the police force for its continued partnership with the prison service.

“Contraband entering a prison presents a serious risk to staff, prisoners and the wider community. This practical and highly visible measure strengthens our collective efforts and sends a clear message that suspicious activity around the prison will be monitored and addressed,” Kendall stated.

The two agencies have previously conducted joint security operations at the territory’s prison.

The Ministry of Health and Social Development said the latest initiative supports its commitment to protecting the health and social well-being of residents through effective policies, sustainable programmes and strategic partnerships aimed at building a safe and resilient society.

Authorities also reminded the public that introducing, attempting to introduce or helping another person to introduce prohibited items into HM Prison constitutes a serious offence.
