Port fees double from September 1 as temporary relief ends

The BVI Ports Authority (BVIPA) is reminding residents that select port fees will return to normal rates as of September 1, bringing an end to temporary reductions introduced four months ago to ease cost-of-living pressures.

Starting this Tuesday, wharfage charges will return from one percent to two percent, while container handling fees will increase from $150 to $300 per Twenty-foot Equivalent Unit (TEU).

The reduced rates were introduced on May 1 as part of the government’s response to the global fuel crisis and rising cost of living. According to the BVIPA, the measure was intended to provide temporary relief to businesses and consumers by reducing costs within the territory’s supply chain.

The authority is now advising importers and other stakeholders to take note of the reinstated rates and make the necessary arrangements. The BVIPA thanked customers, partners and stakeholders for their support during the four-month initiative, saying it was pleased to have contributed to efforts to ease economic pressures across the Virgin Islands.

With the BVI heavily dependent on imports, residents across the territory remain worried that higher port fees could ultimately be passed on to consumers through higher prices for goods. The government has implemented a number of temporary relief measures but residents continue to call for stronger interventions to protect the most vulnerable in society.
