Premier addresses victimisation concerns at BVIEC

Persons concerned about unjust treatment or abuse by the BVI Electricity Corporation (BVIEC) can feel free to take their grouse to the individuals responsible for oversight of that body, Premier Dr Natalio Wheatley has suggested.

“If persons have specific complaints about victimisation or any untoward behaviour — anything that should be noted — I would [invite] them to first of all submit their concerns or their complaints to the head of the board which is Mrs Rosemary Flax,” Premier Wheatley said at a recent Press conference. “And if you don’t get any joy there, you can go directly to the Ministry of Communications and Works and to let your complaints be known.”

The Premier’s statement came in response to questions that unnamed heads of the organisation had been victimising customers and had been mismanaging the agency’s assets.

Regarding the issue of mismanagement, Dr Wheatley said the BVIEC’s accounts are regularly audited and promised to seek confirmation on when the last audit was done.

“If any person has any other reasons why they think that they should be investigated beyond an audit, I’d be happy to hear it,” the Premier said.

The BVIEC recently advertised a vacancy for the post of General Manager, suggesting that its current General Manager, Leroy Abraham, will not be continuing in that post after two decades at the helm.

However, there have been no reports from the government that Abraham’s likely departure has been linked to any complaints addressed by the Premier recently.

Is that the established dispute resolution process?

I can almost guarantee that the victimization in the BVIEC is in no way close to that of the Water and Sewerage Department employees. Ask Wheatley what he did to protect them for overtime without pay and wipe the dictatorship management of the Director. An environment where employees only beg for speedy retirement or department transfer. But BVIEC employees can come to him. Good luck.

Victimization of customers and mismanagement of the multi-millions of dollars of the Corporation’s assets are very serious matters, and trust me where there’s smoke there *is* fire.

Please ensure thorough investigations into these allegations.

is the BVIEC a corporation with co owners that benefit from the government subsidies to the people or a government department and those ‘fees’ be directly subsidized without the people acting as middlemen?
