Premier completes historic bilateral trade mission to St Maarten
The BVI has completed a historic bilateral trade mission to Sint Maarten, which sought to deepen cooperation in key sectors, including tourism, agriculture, maritime affairs, financial services, and health.
Premier and Minister of Finance Dr Natalio Wheatley led the BVI delegation and held high-level discussions with Sint Maarten Prime Minister Luc Mercelina and senior officials from both governments. The mission marked a turning point in the relationship between the two Caribbean territories.
“This mission has strengthened our commitment to collaborate more closely on sustainable development, economic growth, and regional resilience,” Dr Wheatley stated. He added, “The Government of the Virgin Islands is proud to work alongside Sint Maarten to pioneer innovative solutions to common challenges and fully support their intention to pursue membership in the OECS.”
During the meeting, both leaders committed to enhancing regional integration and sharing resources to address mutual challenges. Premier Wheatley described Sint Maarten as “a vibrant and dynamic partner whose energy and vision are vital to advancing the shared goals of the two territories.”
Prime Minister Mercelina welcomed the engagement and recognised the BVI’s leadership in regional sustainable development efforts. “This first-of-its-kind meeting signalled the beginning of something greater,” he explained. “We have planted the seeds of collaboration, and we are committed to cultivating them into results-driven partnerships that will uplift the people of both our islands.”
Mercelina also reaffirmed Sint Maarten’s intent to explore membership in the Organisation of Eastern Caribbean States (OECS), describing deeper integration as “no longer a luxury but a necessity in our changing geopolitical landscape.”
A high-level plenary session, conducted both in person and virtually, included participation from Junior Minister for Financial Services Lorna Smith, Junior Minister for Tourism Luce Hodge-Smith, and Deputy Speaker Karl Dawson, who is the parliamentary lead on agriculture and fisheries.
The visit concluded with both parties pledging to formalise their cooperation and work on joint projects in the months ahead. Officials said the outcome of the trade mission laid a strong foundation for a “brighter, more prosperous future” for both territories.
