Premier condemns latest murder

Not the actual crime scene.

Premier Dr Natalio Wheatley has condemned the recent murder of 25-year-old Purcell resident, Julio Rivera.

Rivera was found with multiple gunshot wounds about his body in the main parking lot on Wickham’s Cay I over the weekend.

“I want to unequivocally condemn the murder of Mr Julio Rivera. Yet again, we have lost another young man in our community to gun violence,” the Premier said.

Dr Wheatley described the current spate of gun crime as ‘very serious’ and commented that the security of the territory would have to continue to be bolstered.

According to the Premier, the issue of crime will be on his agenda for discussions with OT Minister David Rutley next week.

Meanwhile, Premier Wheatley said it would be useful to know what support the UK and the BVI’s governor can offer. He added that additional resources from the UK, both for internal and external security, would be welcome.

“The United Kingdom, of course, they have technical expertise, other types of expertise that can perhaps help us in our fight against crime. But we know it’s going to take not just the United Kingdom,” the Premier stated.

He added: “It’s going to take more than just our local government. It’s going to take all of us working together. Because, of course, crime starts with individuals and these individuals have families and these individuals go to school and these individuals potentially need jobs. So, we have to take a very holistic look at crime.”

More local cameras would probably help. Also sentencing for crimes seems very light. If people were more afraid of doing longer sentences for crime, maybe it would deter them away from committing crimes.

A halt to immigrants fro those islands must be inacted immediately.

Or else, crime and gun violence will continue to rise significanty.

If there are no working cameras in that area where all our Banks are located, then none can be found anywhere else. Vehicles cannot get to that area or leave without passing all four banks. Gun shots, then vehicle(s) driving away hurriedly? No? This is really what we can expect from Policing in the BVI?

But then again, maybe there is footage but nobody bothered to check. What boggles my mind about this is these are majority, at least 80 percent, imported police officers. So why bother if they are not properly trained in crime solving or they don’t actually give a sh** about being effective in their jobs in another man’s land?
