Premier explains Prospect Reef neglect

The state-owned Prospect Reef Hotel on Tortola.

Premier Dr Natalio Wheatley has stated that the absence of a board of directors is the primary reason for the current state of neglect at the former Prospect Reef Hotel area.

“Prospect Reef is a company. I believe the company was struck off and needed to be brought back into good standing. So the boards which were there were focused on that,” the Premier said.

He added: “The property would really be the responsibility of the board and in terms of the property, very soon you’re going to see the whole property scraped, every inch of the property scraped and that should assist with the state of the property.”

According to the Premier, the previous Prospect Reef board expired in June, but he suggested that there have been some challenges experienced in reconstituting a new one. The Premier further noted that there were also some legal issues which the previous board tried to address at the time.

“We were trying to bring the board back into being. We had a new protocol for appointments to persons on boards. So we have to ensure that we observe those protocols,” the Premier stated. “In some instances, some persons who served on the board could not serve again because we have term limits, so to speak, on board appointments.”

Premier Wheatley said he was hopeful that a new board would be in place very soon and explained that he had encouraged staff in the Ministry of Tourism, Culture and Sustainable Development to have a Cabinet paper prepared once he returned from his most recent trip abroad.

“I’ve yet to check with them, but I’m hopeful that we have a Cabinet paper ready so that we can appoint a board and move on with the business of getting Prospect Reef up and running,” he said a day after he returned.

“I truly hope that we can have a board in place before the end of this month,” the Premier stated while sharing that he would be most comfortable if the board resolves the unsightly look of the property.

The property is almost indicative of our country – currently, a tragic mess when something so good could easily be created and built to the benefit of the country as a whole. No vision, no ethics, nothing! There in the ruins we stand hoping for a brighter future that seems so unobtainable under the current state of affairs!

If you replace the word “board” with “cardboard” in the Premier’s quotes, it actually makes much more sense.

Decide prospect reef into local ownership with concessions that foreign whites get, and make shops and hotel or guest house, this white savior complex not going to give the illusion of prosperity when it’s only wealth extraction to white community. In Marxism it is saus the answer lye within us.the solutions.

I don’t know who the Premier listens to but whoever his trusted Advisor is need to tell him sometimes less is more. The senseless babbling about something that he is obviously ill-informed about is so embarrassing!!! It begs the question, what are the priorities of this government? Would any reputable investor/Hotel Chain want anything to do with Prospect Reef after reading the latest news in the media over the past few months? I’m afraid to ask what’s next.

If someone told me you need an entire board to “focus” on bringing a company into good standing, I would just assume they didn’t know what the hell they were talking about, and move on.

The Premier’s excuse sounds like total BS. Restoring a company is something trust companies do each and every day. It takes only a few minutes once you have the unpaid annual licence fees in hand. Whatever the reason for the delay is, it is not that.

If that Board has been collecting a stipend since 2017, they need to repay every penny.

He said, ” I believe the company was struck off and needed to be brought back into good standing. So the boards which were there were focused on that,”

The government had to take over Prospect reef because of fraud and ever since it has decayed. It was in neglected and broken-down condition before Irma and it is now in non-repairable condition and will need to be leveled.
    Great job.

What is most incredible is that a salary or more was being paid out while that property was being taken over by nature. Unbelievable the level of corruption that represemts.

This article, I felt like I was reading gibberish. makes no sense. There is always a need for paper trail yet no actions are being taken #annoyed

    Prospect Reef is rotting away
But it’s BVI so that’s ok
    The Board can’t be blamed
    And nobody’s shamed
Is there really no other way?

  22. Gentleman Jim says:

The lack of a board of directors and the unwillingness to allow foreign investors who have money to come and develop something for the betterment and benefit of all in BVI…. there is money in that there Prospect Reef.

  23. Enemies? says:

Gus Jaspert, Rankinand those kind of names should not be even mentione in the BVI in any form.

All they enjender are colonialisation, neocoonialisation, take over, hatred, horror and bad feelings.

As, the UK and its colonial officials have and will never do any thing good for the Black people of these islands. neither in plain good will acts, investment unless it is in their benefir, education, infrastructure and education reform, nothing.

Such is neither in their Dioxiribonucleic Acid, nature or humanity.

So, those who daily avocating for UK take over are clearly enemies f the Black people of this nation.

  24. Dissolved? says:

Any company that was struck off in June was dissolved and only the Court at huge expense can reinstate. The government wrote this law, if struck off it will cost the taxpayer a fortune in legals fees, penalties and court costs. The entire board must return any penny they were paid for not even having the oversight to pay $450 a year to the Registrar. Better for Government to compulsory acquire and sort it out instead of the usual cash drain with no results.

It didn’t take long to start using the funds that the previous previous government left. Body guards, estate roads, private walls, paying supervisors who could not get of the vehicle. He was jamming.

  26. @Eldread says:

What, my friend, are you trying to say?

  27. @Faith says:

The Premier set himself up for his. All he simply had to say is that Prospect Reef is managed by a BVI Corporate Entity and therefore subjected to more than Central Government’s actions. That’s all he had to say and leave it there. Instead he goes on a rant of pure concentrated fuckery which confused people even more. There are some legal issues to work out, Government is intent on putting out an RFP to get the ball rolling and getting some value at Prospect Reef, that’s it, that’s all!

  28. Mikey Loves Yah says:

Blah blah blah ie I don’t have a clue on how to fix this albatross. But don’t worry, I am Premier Sl** Wande and I will get to the bottom of this even if it takes me 100 yrs

  29. Hmmmm says:

That is a project they could raise funds from the public to build but instead they are trying to raise funds for the former premier’s legal fees in the USA. They could do what was done for the pier park. That worked.

The same people who funded their political campaigns so that they could hand out envelopes into the wee hours of Election Day should help out with Andrew’s legal bills. Alternatively, his cousin who collects over a $1M from government monthly in rent should be able to forego one month’s rent as a “love offering.”

  30. There is a Real reason! says:

The fact is, the BVI government has no business trying to run a resort hotel.
I am not sure they have any business running a country after this statement.
Please fix the roads, schools and the hospitals and get your nose out of all this junk. This government way to interested in shining objects to do they real jobs!

  31. #Hmmmm says:

What worked at Pier Park? The $ 35 million overrun, or the missimg $ 1o million in “soft costs”?
