Premier hails Logos Hope visit as ‘Gateway to Discovery’

The Virgin Islands recently welcomed the world’s largest floating book fair, MV Logos Hope, marking its first-ever visit to the Territory. The vessel arrived in Road Town on October 24 2025, carrying thousands of books and a message of learning, unity, and cultural exchange.

Premier Dr Natalio Wheatley officially greeted the ship and its international crew during an opening ceremony held aboard the vessel. He described the visit as a historic and inspiring moment for the Territory.

“On behalf of the Government and people of the Virgin Islands, it is my distinct honour and great pleasure to welcome the MV Logos Hope and her remarkable crew to our shores,” Wheatley stated.

He said the ship’s arrival represented more than a stop on its global voyage, encouraging residents to rediscover “the joy of reading and the power of knowledge.” The Premier highlighted the event’s importance for young people, urging students to explore the ship’s extensive collection.

“For our children and students, this ship is a gateway to discovery. Each book aboard opens a new world of adventure, science, history, and faith,” he explained.

Wheatley also commended teachers, readers, and local authors for nurturing literacy and imagination within the community. He praised the Logos Hope crew for their humanitarian spirit, noting that they would be working with local churches and engaging in charitable projects during their stay.

“This generosity of heart embodies the very best of humanity,” he said, adding that the ship’s message of peace and compassion serves as a reminder of shared human values.

The MV Logos Hope is operated by the non-profit organisation GBA Ships, which has been promoting literacy and goodwill through book fairs and community outreach since 1970. The ship’s crew consists of volunteers from over 60 countries who travel the world offering books at affordable prices and participating in local service projects.

The Premier closed his remarks by extending the Territory’s friendship to the crew and expressing hope that Road Town would remain a welcoming port for future visits. “Your presence enriches our cultural landscape and inspires us to keep learning, keep reading, and keep believing in the power of the written word,” Wheatley added.

You really complaining about a $2 entry fee and to top it off the book prices are reasonable? You must be joking, or you do not see the value in books. If it is that you cannot afford the low prices just keep it moving. Everything can not be free. bmud
