Premier: ‘I have not shunned the media’

Premier Andrew Fahie

Premier Andrew Fahie has shot down claims that his administration has shunned the media.

The Premier was at the time responding to questions from reporters during a press conference on Tuesday.

“I have shunned no media. Maybe in a public domain like this,” he stated. “I don’t shun the media. We have not shunned the media … I want to make it clear because when things go out to the public, they will get the wrong impression like we are trying to hide something. I have nothing to hide. You cannot be private in the public.”

Fahie also dismissed claims that his administration did not issue adequate information to the public during the lockdown period.

Premier Fahie said anyone who claims his administration has not been giving sufficient information “has to be someone who was inside the curfew without a radio, TV, phone or anything at all”.

He then proceeded to recall times when members of the media were allowed interviews with him and have made contact with him via social media.

“I would give them the answer if I have it,” Fahie said, adding that he points them in the direction whenever he does not have the requested information.

Hours before the press conference, he issued a media press advisory stating that “journalists must submit questions [beforehand] … to take part in today’s (yesterday’s) press conference”.

The Premier later claimed that the request was so he and other participating officials could conduct research.

The media collectively should be ashamed at how they performed at that press conference. Did they actually plan to ask any relevant questions?

The media was called two hours before the press conference to tell them that there was a press conference and they must send their questions an hour before the press conference. This is ridiculous

Disgraceful performance by the majority of media at that press conference…and to think they were up in arms in April for the Premier just issuing statements and not hold press conference. The media need to realise that our Premier was a teacher and not just any teacher…a Maths teacher…they didn’t do their homework and got schooled yesterday. The Premier was right…they really needed to write down their questions in advance. Just disgraceful.

Zan Lewis question to the minister of health was totally out of place, hear say and gossip questions should it be asked in a press conference. Most of the media questions were sinless to me ,the reporters should be better prepared.
