Premier lauds teachers for resilience and dedication

The BVI’s Premier has applauded teachers for their dedication and resilience as the territory observed World Teachers Day yesterday.

Premier Dr Natalio Wheatley, a former teacher himself, thanked teachers for shaping the minds of tomorrow and celebrated their passion, commitment and positive impact on the lives of children.

Two other members of the government – Health Minister Vincent Wheatley and Education Minister Sharie de Castro – are also former educators.

Dr Wheatley said the tireless efforts of teachers are the foundation of success for schools in the territory.

The 2023 theme for Teachers Day is, ‘The Teachers We Need For The Education We Want: The Global Imperative To Reverse The Teacher Shortage’ and it is aimed at raising awareness of the global teacher shortage and advocating for policies that will attract and retain more teachers.

“Any progress or individual accomplishment I have made is owed in large part to my teachers, including my mother, who was my first teacher,” Premier Wheatley said.

He added: “I also had the distinct privilege of being an educator in the education system and I understand the sacrifices and the dedication required of our teachers in order to facilitate the education of the nation.”

The Premier further stated that his government salutes the men and women who have committed themselves to the upliftment of the territory’s children, including his own children who are students in the public education system.

“We will continue to put measures in place to address your concerns as we work together to uplift the education sector in the Virgin Islands,” the Premier added.

  1. DONT BE FOOLED says:

    PURE OLD TALK

  2. Perhaps says:

He needs to treat the teachers in the manner in which they should be treated. Stop the fake BS man. The teachers should be treated and respected for the hard work that they put in everyday.

A few good words, a pat on the back of thanks and no raise in salary with employment packages.

  4. Action says:

I applaud the premier for applauding the teachers. It is what we are taught in college as TQM,total quàlity management. I have one question however for the Hon Premier would the teacher and the civil servants in general applaud the premier and his government for the way they are treàted, we the population appauld the government for the way they are handling the economy and running the country. By the way welcome back when is your next trip. Probably to the next dog fight somewhere at the expense of the suffering under appreciated tax payers.

  5. It is not right . Retired Teachers are Not Paid. says:

The premier is applauded for recognizing the teachers. They are the one sector of society that continue to be overlooked, underpaid unacknowledged even as they give and spread knowledge.

Moreover, total quàlity management includes paying the retired teachers their monies still owed to them, which includes years of increments..

They have lived through four governments and are still waiting to be paid.

Such is cruel and deliberate punishment to those who have served with pride, dedication and commitment for an entire career.. It is not right that they have not received their payments.

Are people really thinking that there opinion or lack thereof have a popularist view based upon whether a comment has any number of thumbs up or down underneath it?

Such vehicles and thinking do not relfect the broad base of the populace. Instead, it repesents a small and closed minded set that thinks they control the narrative and thinking of the wider public, and only what they agree with garners the majority of thumbs up or down.

This is a clear and evident practice with the site for a long time now. But is it a productive and politically enhancing practice? Unfortunately, it is not. Its only purpose is to sooth a few big egos, obviously.

Features locked down on this one bouy. Wonder why? Ego, lunacy and a different mind set laced with false supremacy, more than likely..

  8. Really? says:

Stop talking so much and put actions behind your words. Teachers dont want to hear no more talking, we want to see action. Yes some of the frustration is about pay but not all of it is about pay. When you work at a school and have to bring toilet paper from your home so your students can have it to use, you think I want to hear any talking?? If teachers were to share some of the horrors we have endured in last 10+ years it would embarass the BVI. If every teacher did not show up to work the BVI would not be able to function. Stop talking and get to work. We sick of the BS!!
