Premier: No reported loss of life, significant property damage from Dorian

Premier Andrew Fahie has said there is no reported loss of life or significant property damage as a result of Hurricane Dorian that passed the territory Wednesday, August 28.

In an address following the disaster passing the territory, Premier Fahie also said there has been no serious injuries, crimes, or problems in relation to businesses being compromised.

“We did, however, experience some major flooding on the outskirts of Road Town with some damage to buildings reported and debris on some roads in those areas,” Fahie said.

According to the Premier, the Minister for Transportation, Works and Utilities, Kye Rymer and his team have already begun to address what he described as hotspot areas.

“I am optimistic that the preventative work that your government has been doing over the past few weeks to clean and clear ghuts and other major watercourses of debris would have helped to reduce the impact of the heavy rains on vulnerable areas. We will continue to do this throughout the territory,” he added.

Wednesday’s hurricane was the first to impact the territory for the 2019 Atlantic Hurricane Season.

Latest and final Dorian advisory

Meanwhile, in its final weather advisory on Dorian, the Department of Disaster Management said at 5 am the centre of Hurricane Dorian was located near latitude 20.5 North, longitude 66.6 West.

This places Dorian at a distance of approximately 195 miles away from the BVI as it continues to move in a northwesterly direction near 13 miles per hour.

“A west-northwestward motion is forecast to begin Friday night and continue into the weekend. On this track, Dorian should move over the Atlantic well east of the southeastern and central Bahamas today and on Friday. [It will then] approach the northwestern Bahamas on Saturday,” the DDM further informed.

Notably, lingering rain bands due to Hurricane Dorian is expected to continue to create unsettling weather for the BVI, the DDM has said.

This means the possibility of more showers remains high in the British Virgin Islands.

Grateful the storm has passed. We still have to keep ourselves prepared in the event another storm comes this way.

The RDA was there almost 2yrs before this PREMIER took office so obviously this Premier is not the problem. It either has to be the former government or the RDA themsleves.

I don’t want to hear absolutely nothing about the UK & their so called loan guarentee. The UK gave the BVI grants to fix the police stations and prison but tell the BVI to get a loan guarantee and loans to fix the rest. This is indicative of how less the UK thinks of us.

        The DNA of colonialism.

Prisons, prisons, prisons and nothing else.

History is the source of such truths, here and whever else they have exorted their control.

It seems like the Governor is fully in charge because Fahie always comes on after. Lavity, Cyril, Willard and Ralph always used to take control but it seems like Andrew is just as soft as Dr.Smith
